Opening Marked Photos

  1. Open Adobe Photoshop

  2. Open the group of photos taken on a specific date as follows: In the location C:\data\date (e.g. December2014), (Or Desktop\Greenhouseyear)double click on the folder of the desired data. Use the SHIFT function to open all the photo files in the folder in the format 'DSCF####'. The files may take a few minutes to open.

  3. Create a new desktop folder titled 'Greenhouse_your initials', and copy the folder of photos you just opened from C:\data\date (e.g. December2014), to this new folder. This will ensure that the original photos are not replaced and will make the saving procedure easier.

  4. In this new desktop folder, create a new folder titled 'datemarked_your initials' (e.g. 100309marked_jv). Create an additional folder in the location Qnap:\data\Greenhouseyear titled 'datemarked_your initials', where you will move your completed works to once your desktop file is full or when you have marked all photos from that day.

  5. Open the retakes from the same folder as the original photos. The retakes are marked before the rest of the photos to prevent repetition.

Marking Photos

  1. Select the pencil tool and set it to 13px diameter and to colour #c80176c (R:200,G:1,B:118).

  2. Mark all aphids seen on plants within the quadrat.

  3. Dots should be separated by at least two pixels.

  4. Aphids abdomens must be on or within the grid-line and the majority of their abdomen must be visible.

  5. Do not count aphids that are out of focus.

  6. Do not count aphids on the grid paper or those located outside the 4cm x 4cm square grid.

  7. On tendril leafs, do not count aphids behind the leaf (i.e the side facing away from the camera).

Lab Book Recording

  1. Choose the book that corresponds to the row you are looking at (i.e A,B,C or D)

  2. Write down the number of aphids you counted for each picture in the appropriate space. Double check that the label in the photo matches the label in the lab book. (Note that the sample number is not written but determined based on order from top to bottom in the book, the top being sample 1).

Saving Marked Photos

  1. Save marked photos to the folder you created in Step 3 of the 'Opening Photos' section.

  2. Use the following format when saving photos: plotXXX_YY_Z_date (e.g. plot4bn_al_220314), XXX = enclosure, YY = section within enclosure, Z = sample number,
