Withering is an illness caught by all living overworld creatures that stay in the nether for too long. It is unnoticeable at first, but as the entity stays in the dimension, the effect grows stronger until it starts getting the wither effect.

Illness Progression

A mob will start getting ill as soon as it enters the nether dimension. Any nocive effects will show up for the first roughly 20 minutes.

Damage

Staying approximately 20 minutes in the nether will start giving the withering effect to the ill entity, effectively damaging him. The effect will be granted 50% of the time every 30 seconds. The effect will increase with time, dealing more damage to the mob.

Curing

Staying on other dimensions

Staying on dimensions other than the nether will cure the mob from withering, removing 3 minutes worth of illness by every minute it passes.

Eating Warped Wart Food

Eating Warped Wart, Chrous Fruit, Warped Stew or Warped Wart Stew will remove several minutes of withering to the player when eaten, the limit being at 20 extra minutes of withering immunity. Eating this kind of food food will also increase warped food poisoning.

Defeating Wither Skeletons

Killing a Wither Skeleton will remove 1 minute worth of Withering. Killing the Wither Boss will remove 20 minutes. This can result in a maximum of 40 extra minutes of withering invulnerability.

Prevention

Wearing Stray Robes

Wearing Stray Robes will halt the Withering progression when staying in the nether, consuming the armor's durability in exchange. Staying on dimensions other than the nether will resume the curing progress

Exceptions

Skeletons

Withered skeletons wont' die after being damaged by the withering. Instead, they'll turn into Wither Skeletons, keeping all their equipment and relevant data, except for their UUID and other minor tags. This applies to the datapack's skeleton variants.

Skeleton WOlves

Withered Skeleton Wolves will turn into Wither Skeleton Wolves. Those are bigger and stronger than regular wolves, with 60 HP and 7 attack damage.
