Story - CiscuLog/Survivor-s-Elegy GitHub Wiki

The Survivor's Elegy datapack aims to build a history for the world the players play in, which would get uncovered as entities are encountered, locations discovered and items obtained. This intent is still at a very early stage, and will become a more important aspect of the datapack as development progresses and new features are added.

Story Advancement Tab

This advancement tab aims to map out the relationship between entities, structures and gameplay mechanics.

New entries on the advancement tab are discovered as the player progresses in the game. All of the tab entries are initially invisible, and only show themselves when the feature required is discovered.

Lore-centric features added by SE

  • The Enchanter's Guide
  • Reworked Nether Fortresses
  • Infected Zombies and Phage
  • Jungle Ruins and Enchanted Tablets
  • Withering and Warped Wart
  • Piglin Gear
  • Witch Books
  • First world join effects

Inspirations

While the datapack we currently see today might not align with this story-centric intent, it has been adding features to start developing a lore guided adventure.

It all started when Siscu played Outer Wilds, a game about space archaeology. While not described like that by anyone, this description is held by the fact that a central mechanic on said game is to discover remnants of information left centuries ago by an extinct civilization, piecing it all together and understanding a complex picture of what once happened in the solar system you inhabit. Outer Wilds does this without guiding you, letting the player explore at its own pace and letting their own interest guide them.

One of the method Outer Wilds manages to keep the player informed with a good picture of what they have discovered, is the Space Ship Log, specially the "Rumor Mode". This mode Shows cards representing pieces of information with arrows pointing at other cards. It's laid out like a detective board, as if you were uncovering a mystery. And as such the idea of SE's "Story Advancement Tab" came to be. The main focus for future versions of the tab is to guide the player with the information they have gathered, in hopes for them to be able to see the bigger picture of the world they've been playing in.

As I'm writing this, I have started developing the first of a set of updates centered on adding mostly features that will contribute to the story aspect of the Minecraft world. While pretty straightforward, the intent with those updates is to add new story figments to the world, so the player can find them out slowly but surely. This will take a large amount of time to implement, so if any of what I said sounds interesting or exciting to you, I hope for you to stay around, and be patient.
