2.5. Lighting and Textures - CiarennHollis/TheTemple GitHub Wiki
Texturing
The Theme of this level is a Greco-roman-ish style temple. With the maze in the lower levels of the map, I wanted to gently convey the story of the Minotaur. Some of the modeling done does this, but I wanted to use textures that would enhance this narrative. As the player gets deeper into the temple, the environment turns from this bright white to a dark gritty stone.
Process
- I didn't start texturing until the bulk of the geometry had been modeled.
- Textures from a few different ways I found and from the original id wads were compiled into a custom wad. The wads I found are linked in the Credits Page of this wiki.
- I went through the map, texturing one room at a time.
Lighting
I decided to make it nighttime in the outdoor areas of the map. So, I lit those areas according to the direction of the moon in the scene. As the player progresses through the level, the lighting of the indoor areas slowly gets darker. The Labyrinth has more dramatic lighting.
Process
- I didn't start adding lights until the bulk of the texturing was done.
- I went through the map, lighting one room at a time.

Note

Gold Key Issue
- Some players either couldn't find the gold key or didn't know they needed it until the end
- The area where it is has been lit so it catches the player's attention while fighting in the Worship area
