OWD is a baseline level of access in your org. The OWD sharing model in Salesforce is fundamental to the platform’s data security framework. Also, it establishes the default access levels for each object within an organization, serving as the foundation upon which more granular access control can be built using other features such as role hierarchy, sharing rules, manual sharing, and field-level security.

You can provide below access to any object using OWD:

  • Private
  • Public Read Only
  • Public Read/Write
  • Public Read/Write/Transfer (For Opportunity, Cases and Leads)
  • Controlled by parent (For Master Details)
  • Public full access

For User object there can be only two access given:

  • Private
  • Public Read Only
