There were ten men and women called the Heralds of the Almighty, and The Almighty gave them swords called the Honourblades. These blades, unique instances of what would become known as Shardblades, granted their holders the ability to bind the Surges, the forces that held creation together.

The Heralds of the Almighty helped mankind to fight the Voidbringers, terrible creatures of myth that would come from damnation to terrorize Roshar. When the Voidbringers returned, in times called Desolations, the Heralds would train the Knights Radiant, humans with incredible powers like the Heralds. According to lore, mankind pushed the Voidbringers back from Roshar, and now the Heralds fight them in the Tranquiline Halls - Heaven, which mankind must one day reclaim. The Radiants, however, are said to have betrayed humanity, and haven't been seen for centuries, perhaps millennia.
