Surges - Capaloptocus/wordsofradiancemod GitHub Wiki
The ten surges represent the fundamental forces by which the Universe is held together. Gravitation, surface tension, the strong axial force, etc. Some represent more abstract ideas, such as Transformation and Transportation. Surgebinding requires Investiture to fuel it - a kind of magical energy. In the Stormlight Archive, the main source of investiture used is Stormlight, light left in gemstones by the great storms that sweep across the land periodically. In this mod, it uses the player's hunger bar to fuel their powers. One-time effects, like giving an effect to another entity, takes a portion of the players food immediately. Continuous effects, like Lashing yourself, will drain it continuously.
Note: If, for some reason, you find you have access to more than two surges, they should, for the most part, be organised in priority order, with the same order as below. For instance, if you managed to bond with two Honourblades (which shouldn't be possible), you would be granted the two surges highest on this list. Again, that's just in theory. In practice, it gets a little glitchy if you can get access to more than two surges. Still, it shouldn't permanently change anything, so in this case you can always just unbond the Honourblade and, if necessary, reset your active surges by dying.

Gravitation
Explanation
The Surge of Gravitation affects the way things fall. A surgebinder who can access gravitation can change how gravity affects things (called "Lashing" them) - making themselves lighter, for instance (by causing a part of their weight to pull them up instead of down), or causing them to fall upwards instead of downwards. Many more practiced surgebinders can use this to grant themselves a form of flight.
In the Mod
Press the Toggle Power One key (X by default) while you have some hunger to activate "Gravitation Mode". While in this mode you will slow down until you hang stationary in the air. Also, while in gravitation mode, you can:
- Press the Lash Yourself key (Q by default) to Lash yourself. You will then "fall" in that direction until you either lash yourself in another direction or leave gravitation mode.
- Hit an entity with an empty hand to Lash them upwards, sending them soaring into the sky.
- Right-click on an entity to grant them a partial Lashing upwards, making part of their weight pull them up, and part of it pull them down. This grants the entity slow-falling.
Division
Explanation
The Surge of Division is the power to shear axons apart. Using this power, you can set the air alight or cause an object to crumble and decay, as if from centuries of age.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power Two key (C by default) to enter Division mode. While in this mode, you can:
- Create an explosion at your location by pressing the Harmless Division Key (TAB by default)
- Cause all blocks next to you to break by sneaking. As the two surges which may be granted along with Division (Gravitation and Abrasion) grant extra mobility, this lends itself well to tunnelling.
Abrasion
Explanation
Abrasion is the ability to manipulate friction. The most common use of abrasion is Surgebinders using it to glide along the ground, as though skating on ice. They also can use it to make other objects slick, and near-impossible to hold. More rarely, some Surgebinders can use this Surge to increase friction, making themselves grind along the ground, and thus be harder to move.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power One key (X by default) to enter Abrasion mode. While in this mode:
- You will glide along the ground, including up steps 1 block high. If moving along flat ground, this will allow you to move faster than any other method of transport (except perhaps boats on ice).
- You may right-click on an entity to make them slick, making them slide along the ground and drop any item in their hand.
Progression
Explanation
The Surge of Progression, also known as Regrowth, has two main applications. The first is healing. Using Progression on an injured person or creature can heal them, specifically by aligning their body (somewhat) with the way they see themselves. Progression can also be used to cause plants to grow.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power Two key (C by default) to activate "Progression mode". While in this mode:
- You will be granted Regeneration V.
- By right-clicking a block, it will react as though bone meal were used on it.
- By right-clicking a block, you will remove any negative effects on yourself such as wither, weakness, poison, etc.
- By right-clicking an entity, you can grant them Regeneration and cure any negative effects on them.
Illumination
Explanation
The Surge of Illumination, also known as Lightweaving, is the art of manipulating light to create illusions. These can be attached to things or people, and so used as disguises, or be stationary, or even move around. Experienced Lightweavers are sometimes able to warp the air in such a way as to create sound, granting their illusions voices.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power One key (X by default) to enter "Illusion mode". While in this mode:
- You are invisible.
- Left-click on a block with an empty hand to be given an illusory version of that block, which you can place.
- Left-click in the air with an empty hand to summon an illusory version of me.
Transformation
Explanation
The Surge of Transformation, otherwise known as Soulcasting, allows the users to change one object into another. It is easiest to turn an object into one of the ten essences, but with enough experience and investiture, it is theoretically possible (within limits) to change any object into any other. It is also possible to Soulcast living creatures, though this is difficult as their souls resist it.
The Ten Essences are subsets of matter that Vorin theology uses to describe the world, so everything that exists supposedly is made up of these things.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power Two key (C by default) to activate "Transformation mode". While in this mode:
- Left-click on a block to set its coordinates as a starting point and that block as block A.
- Right-click on a block to set its coordinates as the finishing point and open up a GUI.
- Select an essence from the options to change every block between the starting and finishing point of type block A to the selected block. This consumes food for every block. If you run out partway through, it ends there.
Number | Herald | Gemstone | Essence | Soulcasting Properties | Minecraft Block Used |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 (Jes) | Jezerezeh | Sapphire | Zephyr | Air, Translucent Gas | Air |
2 (Nan) | Nalan | Smokestone | Vapor | Smoke, Opaque gas, Fog | Smoke |
3 (Chach) | Chananranach | Ruby | Spark | Fire | Fire |
4 (Vev) | Vedeledev | Diamond | Lucentia | Crystal, Quartz, Glass | Quartz |
5 (Palah) | Pailiah | Emerald | Pulp | Wood, Moss, Plants | Hay Bales |
6 (Shash) | Shalash | Garnet | Blood | Blood, All Non-Oil Liquids | Water |
7 (Betab) | Battah | Zircon | Tallow | All Kinds Of Oil | Coal |
8 (Kak) | Kelek | Amethyst | Foil | Metal | Iron Blocks |
9 (Tanat) | Talenelat | Topaz | Talus | Rock and Stone | Stone |
10 (Ishi) | Ishi | Heliodor | Sinew | Flesh, Meat | Bone Blocks |
Note: I'm undecided between hay bales and oak logs for pulp at the moment, so feedback would be appreciated! Oak logs seem good because wood is useful, but then one of the main uses for Soulcasters in the books (since there are devices that can Soulcast) is to turn stones into food. Also, since the magic in the mod is fueled by food, it seems a good idea to make it easily accessible. Idk, like I say, I'd love peoples' opinions.
Transportation
Explanation
The Surge of Transportation, has a few applications. For one, surgebinders with access to Transportation can often glimpse into Shadesmar, also called the Cognitive Realm. In this place, many spren manifest differently, as for most this is their native realm. Additionally, souls in the physical realm are reflected here as small lights. Glimpsing into Shadesmar will reveal nearby souls, and potentially voidspren or other such entities. The Surge of Transportation can also be used to move into Shadesmar fully. Most Surgebinders with access to this art can slip into Shadesmar alone. More practiced users can create Elsegates, temporary portals, that lead from the Physical Realm to the Cognitive. Finally, uniquely skilled Surgebinders may be able to use Transportation to Elsecall, creating Elsegates that lead from one part of the Physical Realm to another. In one instance, this was used to allow a large number of humans to migrate directly from one planet to another (usually, the only way to move between planets is by travelling through Shadesmar. Since people tend to think of 'space' as one singular place, the space between planets in the Cognitive Realm is considerably smaller than in the Physical Realm)
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power One key (X by default) to enter "Transportation mode". While in this mode:
- Sneak to highlight nearby entities (glimpsing into Shadesmar).
- Right-click to teleport yourself ~10 blocks in the direction you're looking.
- Press the Elsecall button (B by default) to transfer yourself to the cognitive realm.
- Press the Else Gate Key (Nether) (N by default) to transport yourself to the nether or back.
Cohesion
Explanation
The Surge of Cohesion, sometimes known as Stoneshaping or the Surge of Strong Axial Interconnection, is the ability to manipulate objects at a molecular level. Using this power, a surgebinder is able to manipulate objects (stone in particular) as though they were made of clay. Other surgebinders have used this surge to move through stone, as if in a current underwater that they controlled. While any investiture resists surgebinding to an extent, this is especially true of Cohesion - even a small amount of Stormlight infused in an object will prevent the use of Cohesion upon it, and similarly it cannot be used on living creatures, as the soul is made of investiture.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power Two key (C by default) to activate "Cohesion mode". While in this mode:
- Right-click on a block (that hasn't ever been alive, unlike say wood) to make it soft enough to move through.
- Sneak while standing on a suitable block to sink into the ground.
- Press the Stoneshaping, Mass key (TAB by default) to turn a large part of the ground around you into a liquid-like substance. This will suck down hostile entities.
Tension
Explanation
The Surge of Tension, otherwise known as the Surge of Soft Axial Interconnection, is the ability to alter the stiffness of an object, for example making a flexible item rigid. Surgebinders with access to Tension were known as especially dangerous as they could use almost anything as a weapon, grabbing a piece of clothing or a ribbon and making it as hard as iron.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power One key (X by default) to enter "Tension mode". While in this mode:
- Right-click with a tool, weapon, or piece of armour in your hand to make it as hard and effective as netherite. You can change it back to normal by right-clicking with it in your hand again, or when you run out of food.
Adhesion
Explanation
The Surge of Adhesion is the power to bind things together. Using this Surge, a surgebinder can cover the ground or an object with glowing power, making anything that comes into contact with it stick with an unbreakable bond. Some Surgebinders have used this to stick stones or other objects to the wall, then detach them by withdrawing their power, allowing them to climb where there were previously no handholds.
In the mod
Press the Toggle Power Two key (C by default) to enter "Adhesion mode". While in this mode:
- Right-click on the ground to cover that part of the ground with adhesive. Any entity coming into contact with this adhesive will find themselves stuck to it. This adhesive disappears if you turn off your adhesion or get too far away.
- Right-click on a block while holding cobblestone in your hand to stick the stones to the block, allowing you to climb using them. They will pop off the wall if you leave adhesion mode or get too far away.
