2025 ‐ Working with GDAT - CameronD73/529renew GitHub Wiki

This page describes aspects of operation that relate specifically to exporting data without DNA segments to GDAT (the Genealogical DNA Analysis Tool).

There are two buttons added in V2.3.0 to help load data onto GDAT. These are on the row of buttons headed "Export (23andMe misc data)".

The buttons are labelled:

  1. D'load GDAT Relatives for a list of relatives to the specified profile person, and
  2. D'load GDAT ICW for a set of data of in-common matches between two relatives.

Both buttons operate on a default of exporting only those results that have changed since the previous export. To get a complete list hold down the shift-key while clicking on the button.

Import templates

To get data into GDAT, you first need import templates. As of March 2025 these are not in the default GDAT installation so they need to be imported as custom templates.

The text files are available from The utilities section of the 529Renew source and are named:

  1. 1-Load 23andMe Relatives from 529.txt and
  2. 2-Load 23andMe ICW from 529.txt You need to download these files to your computer. The number is to tell you in what order they should be used to import fresh data.

Within GDAT:

  • go to menu Edit->Import Templates (F11)
  • select "Import" at the bottom of the right-hand section.
  • choose the template file and check that the column data looks sensible (not all data items will have numbered columns
  • press "Save" at bottom right
  • it should then appear as activated in the central column
  • repeat for the second file.

GDAT Relatives

Use the dropdown above the buttons to "Select profile for import/export". The profile ID will be included in the output file, so GDAT will not import it against the wrong person, although it will only import lines that match the profile currently selected in GDAT.

The most important data is available as soon as the 529-gather process has been run but some data for relatives, such as haplogroups, family names, tree URL, etc is available only after the "Scan ICWs" process has completed.

Once you have saved the csv file you can import it into GDAT in the usual way, using the new template.

ICW matches

This will export the new ICW data for all other matches. The profile person is not relevant here, as these are the matches that do not include data for any profiles. GDAT analysis will link the shared matches as appropriate.

Again, export the csv file and import it into GDAT using the 2nd template.
