⚡ Quick Start

  1. Install Hugo extended v0.139.0. CI uses this version, so use the same one locally.

  2. Clone the repo and start the dev server:

    git clone [email protected]:CMJM-Lab/cmjm-lab.github.io.git
    cd cmjm-lab.github.io
    hugo server -D

  3. Open http://localhost:1313/. The page reloads by itself when you save a change.

🧰 Common Tasks

Add a team member

💡 New members can add themselves through the browser by following Add Yourself to the Lab Website. The steps below are for maintainers who add someone directly.

  1. Put their photo in static/img/people/. A square image works best.

  2. Create content/people/firstname-lastname.md:

    ---
    title: "Full Name (中文名)"
    role: "Master's Student"
affiliation: "Master's Program in Smart Medicine and Health Informatics, National Taiwan University"
    image: "/img/people/filename.png"
intro: "One or two sentences about their research."
    weight: 10 # lower = appears first
    links:
      - title: "GitHub"
        url: "https://github.com/username"
      - title: "Google Scholar"
        url: "https://scholar.google.com/..."
    ---

⚠️ The role text decides which section the person shows up in.

  • Principal Investigator → featured PI card
  • contains Student (e.g. PhD Student, Master's Student) → Students
  • contains Assistant or Staff (e.g. Research Assistant, Project Assistant) → Staff

A role that matches none of these (e.g. Postdoc) will not appear on the People page unless you update layouts/people/list.html.

Move a member to alumni

Move their file from content/people/ to content/alumni/. You can also add these fields:

years: "2024–2026"
current_position: "Data Scientist at Company X"

Post a news item

Create content/news/YYYY-MM-short-slug.md:

---
title: "News Title"
date: 2025-12-03
tags: ["Funding", "AI"]
featured_image: "/img/news/optional.png" # optional
---

News content in Markdown. Links, lists, and images all work.

Add a publication

Add an entry to the matching YAML file in data/:

# data/publications_leading.yml or data/publications_coauthor.yml
- title: "Paper Title"
  authors: "Chen MJM#, Author B, Liang H*"
  journal: "Journal Name"
  year: 2025
  volume_issue: "11 (8), e1234"
  doi: "10.xxxx/xxxxx"
  • Book chapters go in publications_books.yml (use book: and pages: instead of journal:).
  • Theses go in publications_theses.yml.
  • # = co-first author, * = corresponding author.

Update research areas, software, or open positions

Edit the matching YAML file. You don't need to touch any templates.

🚀 Deployment

Every push to main starts the Deploy Hugo site to GitHub Pages workflow (.github/workflows/hugo.yml). It builds the site with Hugo 0.139.0 and publishes it to GitHub Pages. You can also start it by hand from the Actions tab (workflow_dispatch).

To check a deploy, go to Actions → latest run. Both the build and deploy jobs should be green, and the live site updates within about a minute.

🤝 Contributing Workflow

  1. Create a branch from main (e.g. feat-add-new-member).
  2. Make your changes and preview them locally with hugo server -D.
  3. Open a pull request into main.
  4. When it's merged, the site deploys automatically.
