Establishing World Building within Story Lore:

This semester, we focused on developing world building within the lore of our story. Every story has its own set of traditions and lore that shape its unique world. For example, in Harry Potter, the narrative establishes a clear distinction between Muggles (non-magic users) and wizards. The Ministry of Magic, as the governing body of the wizarding world, enforces strict rules about using magic around Muggles to avoid detection.

This cultural difference between Muggles and wizards sets the mood of the story by highlighting how vastly different these two worlds are. The protagonist, Harry, transitions from the non-magical world into the wizarding world, allowing readers to experience the wonder and challenges of this new environment through his perspective. This journey not only deepens the narrative but also helps audiences relate to Harry as he discovers a new place of belonging.

The Importance of World Anvil:

World Anvil is an interactive wiki designed specifically for world building. It provides a range of functions that help document characters' actions and events within the story’s world. Each fictional world has its own rules governing aspects like weather, gravity, time, culture, race, and gender. These variables are crucial, as they shape the narrative and allow stories to grow organically while maintaining consistency.

By adhering to these predefined templates, creators can branch out their stories without breaking the world’s internal logic. This structured approach is essential for developing a rich and immersive universe.

Dangers of Inconsistent Narrative:

One of the most significant challenges in storytelling is maintaining consistency within the narrative. Deviation from established laws and physics within a world can harm the story’s credibility. For instance, if a character’s actions suddenly contradict the world’s established rules, it disrupts the story’s coherence.

To address this issue, we decided to use World Anvil as our primary tool for world building. By maintaining consistency within the world's laws, the story can branch out naturally while preserving logic and believability. This approach ensures that both the characters' actions and the world's events are justified, enhancing the overall storytelling experience.
