upgrade your Canute 360 to the latest software - Bristol-Braille/canute-ui GitHub Wiki

Upgrading your Canute 360 to the latest firmware

Notes to read before upgrading

You will need a blank SD card or USB stick formatted to FAT32, a desktop or laptop PC, and your Canute 360.

Please apply this upgrade to one machine to test whether it works before applying it to others.

Please only apply this upgrade to a Canute that is already running at version 1.3.19 or higher. You can find the current version you are running by going into the 'system menu' in the Canute. See the end of the article for what do if you are running a version older than V1.3.19 or want to roll back to an older version.

If in any doubt email [email protected] or phone +44 (0)117 325 3022.

How to upgrade

Using your PC download the latest version on the Canute OS firmware page.

There is a 'Download Canute OS' button. Click it to download a ZIP to your PC.

Extract all four files from the zip, titled:

  • 'README.txt'
  • 'boot-v*...tar.xz'
  • 'system-v*...squashfs'
  • 'sysupgrade.sh'

If you are unsure how to extract files from a zip please see these instructions: https://www.wikihow.tech/Extract-Zip-Files

Copy all these files onto an empty FAT32 formatted USB stick or SD card ("the medium"); not FAT16, NTFS, exFAT or any other format.

If in doubt use a small-volume USB stick as these are most likely to be formatted as FAT32. If using an SD card you then you can use SD or SDHC, but not SDXC or SDUC.

Ensure your Canute 360 is turned off.

Put the medium in the Canute. If using an SD card be sure to put it in the correct way, which is with the connectors facing up and towards the Canute.

Turn it on using the switch at the back.

If upgrading from version 2.2.0 or earlier then the Canute will now go through the upgrade procedure.

If upgrading from version 2.3.0 or later then the Canute will start up as normal. Wait until it has completed starting up and then press the power switch at the back again. This will take you to the System Menu. Select Button 7 to start the upgrade.

The upgrade procedure should take around twenty minutes, but if it takes longer let it run to at least forty minutes to make sure.

The Canute will display messages informing you of upgrade progress. If you do not get an initial message on the top line of the display within a few minutes the upgrade is not running.

Once it is done you will be instructed by a message that the install is complete and the Canute will then turn off.

Now take the medium out of the Canute.

Turn the Canute back on again. It will take longer than usual to start up the first time after an upgrade, after which it can be used as normal.

Once it is done please put the medium back in your PC and copy the new log file (called 'sysupgrade.log') to your desktop for safe keeping. It may be useful if there is a problem with your Canute later.

Now you can delete the following files from the medium:

  • 'README.txt'
  • 'boot-v*...tar.xz'
  • 'system-v*...squashfs'
  • 'sysupgrade.sh'

Old versions

Are you running a version older than 1.3.19? You need to upgrade to V1.3.9 before moving on to the later versions. You can find the v1.3.19 upgrade here: https://bristolbraille.org/upgrades/20200204_canute_360_upgrade.zip.

Are you running a version older than 1.3.14? Contact us and we will supply you with the correct upgrade.

If the latest upgrade doesn't work as expected please follow the alternative 'version 1.3.19' link on bristolbraille.org/fw which will roll you back to v1.3.19.

Can I upgrade my Canute 360 if it is docked in the Canute Console?

Yes!

If you have a Canute Console then the latest Canute firmware also works on the Canute display that is included with your Console. Once installed it will improve the performance of the Braille display both in stand alone mode and when used within the Canute Console.

However the Canute 360 firmware cannot be installed directly from the Canute Console.

To install the firmware on the Canute 360 first disconnect it from the Canute Console and lay it on a desk on its own. Then follow the instructions to upgrade your Canute 360 to the latest software. Once installed you can turn it off, re-attach it to the Canute Console and it will continue to operate as normally.
