Reference Frames - BYU-MicrostructureOfMaterials/OpenXY GitHub Wiki

Below is a depiction of the orientation and organization of the reference frames for the different elements of OpenXY. These reference frames operate under the assumption that the default reference frame in the EDAX OIMDC software is used (Reference Frame Option 2). The reference frames Open XY uses are selected off that assumption. In order to use EDAX OIMDC with OpenXY make sure to use the default reference frame in the EDAX OIMDC software.

The XData and YData in this case is referring to the reference frame of the data gathered from the Microscope scan. Meaning when the microscope moves in the “positive X direction” it moves in the direction indicated by the XData arrow, and vice versa for the YData. The XData in the scan will then correlate to the second matrix index in OpenXY. For example, once the variable matrix GrainID is reshaped into a matrix representing the location of each of its values. Taking a step in the X direction of the Microscope or Sample reference frame for GrainID means taking a step along the second matrix index and similarly steps in the Y direction of the sample reference frame correlate to the first matrix index.
