Mutual Aid working definition:
Locally-organized groups focusing on material assistance or service provision. This excludes government arrangements, utility companies, voting drives and protest networks NOT also involved in material assistance, and self-help groups such as AA. This definition is a little bit fuzzy at the 'food bank' level, but serves as a helpful heuristic. In addition - we also exclude historical research on mutual aid societies of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Databases to search:
- WoS, IEEE, SCOPUS, ACM
Search Criteria:
- Search for english language publications in databases by Topic or full-text (if ACM) for 'mutual aid'.
- Then read abstracts and manually filter for inclusion if article meets working definition for mutual aid criteria. (Currently roughly 5-10% of articles)

Databases to search:
- WoS, IEEE, SCOPUS, ACM (exclude Google Scholar, but good for background)
Inclusionary criteria:
- Include (AND/OR): “mutual aid”, “community organiz*”, “community building”, “community development”, “grassroots organiz*”,
“activism”, “cooperatives” - WITH - “technology” AND/OR “information”
Exclusionary:
- Mutual Aid exclusionary criteria - biology, public utilities, etc. (will need to be developed further), could also scope to ‘sociology’, ‘anthropology’, ‘social science’ or ‘geography’ categories. Alternative Mutual Aid names will be harder to parse: need to read in for discussions on hierarchy, structure of work to see if they meet a ‘close enough’ definition. Focus on case studies?
