Transmission Control - BILLyTheLiTTle/RCController GitHub Wiki

The transmission system should be something that could be easily and fast adjusted. It should not be a button because I did not like the way it works. You cannot be precise by using to buttons.

SeekBar on the other hand is a UI item which could take almost any value as fast as the user wants. The SeekBar at the moment has almost 12 points of throttle reference. Whenever the user passes those points (either by dragging or by touching after them) the controller sends a request to the car that the steering wheel should change speed.

When the user releases the SeekBar (does not touch it) the default position will be somewhere at the bottom of the item. As a result it sends a request to the car to be neutral (neither throttle nor brake), it just is in freewheel situation. As soon as the user touches the SeekBarit sends a request to the car to be still by applying the brakes. This could be helpful when the user wants to do a hill start.

Forward

By moving the slider of the SeekBar up and down the user can control the wheel speed. The SeekBar has 12 points of throttle and most of them are located at the top of the SeekBar. For example, changing the throttle from 20% to 40% is much safer than throttle from 85% to 100%. That's why more points of throttle are located at the top.

Brake

The brake is not applied using disc brakes as any regular car. Are applied through the motors. So, less throttle means braking for the car.

Reverse

The reverse direction is really difficult for a lot of people. One reason is that the steering wheels are the "back" wheels while you are moving in reverse. To avoid accidentally reverse direction, the reverse can be activated by long-clicking an ImageView. The you can move in reverse by controlling the throttle as usual.

Cruise control

Let's say that you want to go for a trip (yes, with your rc car!) and you want to be more relaxed. You keep the throttle steady with one finger. With another finger you long-click the cruise control ImageView. Now you can lift off the finger from the throttle. When you want to deactivate the cruise control you can simply control the throttle by yourself and it will be deactivated.

Parking brake

Parking brake should be applied when the car is totally stopped. By long-click the ImageView you block all 4 wheels of the car.

Handbrake

With just a click (not long-click) you can block the rear wheels only. The wheels keep blocking until you lift the finger from the handbrake ImageView. This was implemented with a simple click because it is faster. Who wants to wait for a handbrake to be activated while you want turn a hairpin?!
