NRAO lustre - BHianca/VLA GitHub Wiki
- This info is from the VLA helpdesk:
A user account at NRAO's facility in Socorro, NM has been created per your request. The account name is nm-6571 and is active until 2021-03-31. The NRAO resource use policy is here: https://info.nrao.edu/computing/guide/cluster-processing
You and anyone else on your project are welcome to use NRAO's computing resources for the analysis. I have created a temporary, secure account for you and you should receive an automatic email with your account information shortly. This account uses a unique username and password for each user. The password is the same as your my.nrao.edu password and it will not change unless you change it.
In your account, you should find a directory called "data". In this data directory, you can request data directly from the archive, as this is the only directory that has the correct permissions for the archive to write into by default. Just replace the default destination path with /lustre/aoc/observers/nm-6571/data/ . This should let the archive write your data here directly and save you from having to store it locally.
The automated email will include your login details and the account close date (2021-03-31). If you need additional time, please let us know before this date. If you have lustre space here, you should be able to cp or mv files as needed as long as permissions are set correctly.
Username = nm-6571 Password = your my.nrao.edu account password
For more information about this account, please see: https://info.nrao.edu/computing/guide/cluster-processing
Please let us know if you have any problems or questions regarding this new account and feel free to have the others on your project put in a similar request so they can get there own accounts/storage area.
A lot of this information in more general forms is found here https://info.nrao.edu/computing/guide/cluster-processing/appendix/accessing-the-nmpost-cluster-with-vnc
- In order to log in, you need to access a terminal to ssh into the cluster and acquire a node.
commands:
- ssh nmpost-master
- nodescheduler --request 7 1
- qstat -n1u nm-6571
- vncserver :2
- ssh -L 5902:nmpost046:5902 [email protected]

Once you requested a node, wait for an email with the node number assigned to the account and then directly log into that. It is important to not remain in the master node.
We can start the vncserver now that we are in our own dedicated node where we will access a desktop to use CASA and perform other remote processing tasks. Once in the vncserver, leave that terminal tab open.

-
Open a new terminal tab and put the command ssh -L 5902:nmpost028:5902 [email protected] into TAB2. Leave these tabs open when accessing the remote desktop.

-
The final step is on a mac to go to the finder, connect to server, and put in place the ID from above and login to the desktop.

You will need to manually kill the vnc server process to free the port with vncserver -kill :2, it is important to do this so the port assignments dont increase indefinitely.
- Here is text to upload into a terminal to copy and paste quickly. Just edit to your account and server port.
ssh nmpost-master nodescheduler --request 14 1 qstat -n1u nm-6571
Then exit the master node. Access your node indicated here.

ssh nmpost051 vncserver :2
New tab to open and access.
rcosenti$ ssh -L 5902:nmpost051:5902 [email protected]
