lon[eng] Microenterprise Stack
Theory
Modern tooling makes standing-up a full container orchestration stack far simpler and more pragmatic than it was a few years ago.
Brief
To architect and build a software stack to support microenterprise software development for DV.
Desired Artifact
A repo of documentation, architecture diagrams and full IaC from which a new DV venture could stand up a complete event-based services architecture, with core functionality baked in:
- Service Discovery
- Operability
- Observability
The stack should provide functionality for:
- Service mesh
- Security - API perimeter/WAF
- AuthZ/AuthN
- i18n/l10n
- Caching
- Testing (unit and system)
- Developer experience / local runtime
- Service to service calls both sync and async
- Pub/Sub message broker
- Observability
- Operability
- Deployment (blue/green)
- Versioning
- Horizontal auto-scaling
- DNS
- Multiple environments
- Persistence (SQL + noSQL)
Action Plan
This is a big ask, which runs the risk of getting rapidly complex and potentially out of control. !
To mitigate this risk, we should collaborate and take small steps.
- Create a working group - document on Confluence
- Assign RI Director[s] to the project
- Seek contributors from the cohort
- Create repo and project on BCGDV Github
- Begin C4 architecture diagrams
- Build helloWorld services
- Spike simple container deployments with various tools/cloud providers
- RI Director establish meeting cadence and next steps
