The purpose is to start from a "synthetic" score image and deteriorate it so as to reproduce the defects that are most often encountered in scanned sheets of music.

There are many possibilities offered on the Internet. Within the hack-day, we performed a limited number of operations:

• Operations that don't impact geometry. The symbol annotations were not modified. Just the image was impacted by noise addition:

  • Gaussian
  • Speckle
  • Poisson
  • Salt & pepper

• Operations that impact geometry. For those operations, the symbol bounding boxes had to be recomputed since each symbol could be impacted by:

  • Rotation
  • Slant
  • Tangential distortion

We could also try the use of morphological closing operation to mimic the fact that very close objects can get artificially "connected" by black pixels.
