How could the game be turned on its head to make it interesting?

  1. You could be defending the world from the meteors, and thus have to get hit by as many as possible.
  2. Some of the falling blocks you have to catch, others avoid.
  3. The falling blocks aim at you in some way, and you have to take advantage of this to get them in specific places. Maybe you're building a tower with them?
  4. Maybe even a bowling-type mechanic, where you use the targeting of the falling blocks to try and knock things over.
  5. The defend-the-world mechanic, but where you have an amount of health. Each meteor you destroy rather than it reaching the earth, injures you. So you have to catch as many of the falling healing items as you can. There's a balance between protecting the Earth now, and keeping yourself going so you can protect the Earth later. Though I'm not sure how this would be reflected in the score. Maybe the meteor shower lasts X amount of time, and your score is the inverse of how may people on Earth were killed. If you don't survive, you lose.
