Righteous Fury

Righteous Fury is the paladin's equivalent to a warrior's Defensive Stance, such that the player's threat generation will be significantly increased, which is essential to be able to maintain aggro while tanking.

Default in-game tooltip for Righteous Fury.

Increases the threat generated by your Holy attacks by 60%. Lasts 30 min.

In its base form, Righteous Fury will increase the threat of your Holy attacks by 60%, and maxing out the Improved Righteous Fury talent (3/3) will raise it further to 90%.

What is a Holy Attack ? Everything.

Blizzard confirmation that Righteous Fury grants additional threat on all holy abilities, not just attacks

The in-game description for Righteous Fury explicitly states that it increases the threat generated by Holy attacks, which is most likely to be interpreted as any paladin abilities that deal Holy damage, such as:

  • Consecration
  • Seal/Judgement of Righteousness/Command
  • Holy Shield
  • Hammer of Wrath
  • Exorcism
  • Holy Wrath
  • Retribution Aura
  • Holy Shock

However, based on extensive in-game verification by the paladin tank community, the threat increase of Righteous Fury applies to virtually ALL paladin abilities, including utility and healing abilities, such as:

  • Seals (initial cast)
  • Blessings
  • Cleanses
  • Healing Spells
  • Restorative Proc Effects (Seal/Judgement of Light & Wisdom)

The reason why Righteous Fury amplifies the threat of all Paladin abilities is because it has the same Mod threat aura as a warrior's Defensive Stance. The main difference these abilities is that Defensive Stance flags physical abilities, whereas Righteous Fury flags Holy abilities. This unique characteristic of Righteous Fury increases the potential of non-damaging abilities being used as threat generation tools.

Hidden Threat Generation

Because of this, non-damaging abilities such as Blessings have the potential to be used as powerful threat generation tools. The rule of thumb for the base threat generation of non-damaging abilities is that it's equal to the level at which you can learn the ability. For example, Blessing of Might Rank 6 can be learnt at level 52, therefore its base threat will be 52 when cast.

Greater Blessing Threat Generation

Greater Blessing abilities have several unique properties that can make them into powerful threat generation tools:

  • The total threat generated by a single cast scales linearly with the number of players buffed.
  • Since Greater Blessings affect all players of the same class, the maximum number of players than can be buffed with a single cast is 40 - an entire raid group. This outclasses buffing abilities from other classes which are usually limited to buffing up to 5 players that are in the same party.
  • The total threat generated can amplified by Righteous Fury while active.

With these properties in mind, the theoretical maximum threat generation for a single Greater Blessing can be modeled with the following formula:

The 1.90 threat multiplier comes from Improved Righteous Fury.

To demonstrate the threat generation potential of these abilities, sample threat values for some Greater Blessing abilities have been calculated and collected in the table below:

Greater Blessing of Rank Base Threat Mana Threat_{RF=1.90, n_{players}=5} Threat_{RF=1.90, n_{players}=10}
Kings 1 60 140 570 1140
Light 1 60 260 570 1140
Might 1 52 220 494 988
Might 2 60 260 570 1140
Salvation 1 60 16% Base Mana 570 1140
Sanctuary 1 60 270 570 1140
Wisdom 1 0 230 0 0
Wisdom 2 0 250 0 0

As you can see from the data, the more players that are buffed per cast, the higher the threat generation, for which raids can provide the best possible conditions to maximize threat generation. With a Global Cooldown of 1.5 seconds, spam casting Greater Blessings can be utilized for massive threat generation, which can be extremely useful for maintaining aggro on raid bosses.
