Hypervisor (or virtual machine monitor, VMM, virtualizer)
Creates and runs virtual machines

Terminologies

Host machine - Runs hypervisor
Guest machine - Virtual machine that runs on a hypervisor

Variants

Type-1, native or bare-metal hypervisors

Run directly on the host's hardware
Microsoft Hyper-V, VMware ESXi and Xen

Type-2 or hosted hypervisors

Runs on a conventional operating system (OS)
Examples - QEMU, VirtualBox, VMware Player
