Although they may emit less carbon dioxide per mile than gasoline cars, the pollution from particulates and nitrogen oxides still poses health risks in cities. This has pushed many urban areas to phase out older diesel vehicles in favor of greener alternatives.

The Future

The future of diesel isn’t as straightforward as it once was. As more countries move toward electric mobility and stricter emissions laws, diesel’s dominance is gradually being questioned. But it’s far from disappearing. New engine technologies and renewable fuel options are keeping diesel relevant in industries where electric power just isn’t practical yet.

Heavy transport, aviation ground support, and shipping are still largely diesel-dependent, and it might take decades for them to transition completely. Engineers continue to innovate, making cleaner diesel fuels and engines that meet modern environmental standards without losing the efficiency that made diesel famous in the first place.
