Topic Idea 1: Pi-Driven Hydroponic Growth System with a focus on Virtual Access and Web Security.
By Sam Johnson
Overview
This project would entail the creation of a Raspberry Pi driven, remotely controllable hydroponic crop growing system, with special emphasis on the networking and security measures needed to make remote control a secure option. We are interested in pursuing this topic in order to provide a more secure and efficient option for small scale hydroponic growth.
Project Description
This topic will entail a heavier focus on the remote managing and controlling of the hydroponic system. This will include the establishment of a small LAN, consisting of Pi Pico board and two full Pi computers. One of the Pi computers will act as the brain of the unit, hosting a secure web server to display the sensor data. The other will run network management services to monitor the health of the various Pico boards. Due to the technical limitations of the Pico boards, they will only be used to manage the sensors used in the growth system, and report the sensor data back to the main brain Pi. Our main inspiration for this project was to streamline the process of food growth for those who do not have the land or experience to efficiently grow a garden.
Topic Idea 2: Pi-Driven Hydroponic Growth System with a focus on Physical Security and Redundancy.
By Connor Merchant
Overview
Creating a Hydroponic solution that allows us to demonstrate a blend of physical and network security controls and redundancies.
Project Description
For this topic our main focus will be on physical security and hardware implementation. We plan on using multiple sensors to monitor the entire growing environment as well as create redundancies designed to tackle hardware malfunctions and potential attacks. This would allow us to look deeper into integrity of our systems and focus on an element of the CIA triangle that is often times brushed over. The sensors and monitors that would be implemented would be proof of concept for a system that implements physical elements into a networks ability to remain secure. The Colonial pipeline attack was something that influence us to look into this topic due to its blend of physical security and networking security. This will be accomplished using multiple Raspberry Pi's used to collect data and perform tasks based on the inputs they receive.
