Background

Renat L'Risolièr is a mysterious troubador - not the sort with magic words and mysterious powers, but an unknown young man who oft catches the eyes of many a noble's young heir or daughter, with a surprisingly sweet voice and a clever tongue. His ability to impress is renowned for one so young and fair, and his travels about the lands from Tolouse to Montpellier are quite followed by some - and many have started a scandalous rumor about how easily the young man can disappear when people look for him. Renat is usually thought to be from Tolouse, nobody believing his stories of being from Bordeaux and fleeing a tyrannical mother who drove his father to drink. Ivona de Coste was born in the lands controlled by James of Aragon. Her (probable) father, a Languedoc nobleman's son, had managed in his impetuous teenaged youth to capture a river nymph by stealing her cloak, and hid her (unsuccesfully) from his widowed father as his Faerie prize. It was impossible, however, to hide the newborn girl who the nymph had brought to the home. Scandal was suddenly rampant, the strange and beautiful woman who bore a beautiful child for the nobles out of wedlock - but with intrigue, guile, and a purse to the local priest, rumors were clarified or squashed. The young girl, Ivona, was born to the family's maid to an unknown father. The elder father of the house decided to care for the girl when her mother died, to be raised as a niece or granddaughter of a distant relative. No one would dare suggest that the strange water-nymph that was glimpsed so often was the mother. None would dare suggest that the nymph bore a child to the son - or scandal forbid the father. And all of the well-paid servants heard none of the arguments yelled between father and son.
Ivona was educated in proper form for a young and unimportant daughter of decent birth - music and language was popular at the time, and Ivona took to the written word and plucked string with a great delight. She also found the young boys fighting in the yard quite fascinating, and when she was so often rebuffed, she cut her hair and joined them as one of the boys, aided by her gangly tall height. Ivona found herself rapidly living a tiring double-life, learning the proper noble things as a daughter of the household, and learning quite a lot of improper things as the boy Renat in the village nearby. As Ivona grew older, her fey looks drew attention from many a man, and she begged her guardian to keep her safe from their disturbing gazes. They found enticement in her delicate features, her soft hair, and the regal and tall figure she cut. Renat, by comparison, was mocked as a lad, for not growing the muscle of the other swordsman and being delicate, being... girlish. That mocking turned much more angry and violent when a budding Renat began to catch the attention of all the young girls in the villages, who would beg Renat to sing to them with his fair voice.
Back and forth, back and forth. The young girl pined for her time as Renat, where she could be one of the boys. The youth Renat jealously thought of Ivona's ease and expectations. Both sides of the coin trying to seek the richest parts of the others' life.

Description

Ivona is a tall and willowy woman, with slender and delicate curves. She keeps her blonde hair unfashionably short, worn loose and wild, and in the light it reflects and shimmers a bluish hue like a river. Her eyes are a pure, clear blue of a lake in summer, her skin fair enough but clearly showing the faint tan of someone who spends time outdoors. She's regarded as a healthy young woman, with good education, probably good breeding, and a healthy attitude to life, if a bit distant socially. Ivona has found herself plagued by noblemen who seek her hand in marriage, and sometimes noblemen's sons who seek her favor without marriage.
Renat is a man of slight build and beautiful features. His hair is a dirty blonde (in fact, actually dirty to hide the blue) and usually tied back with blue ribbons out of his face. He catches quite a lot of eyes with his fair and delicate appearance and sweet voice, from both men and women, and though Renat loves songs of romance and teasing, he seems adverse to ever trying to recreate any of those love songs himself. He is known to dislike horses, claiming they remind him too much of his mother, and avoids riding and wagons - and travelling on foot leads to more inspiration for stories.
