Background
Being born Gifted is not much than a curse if you parents hate your guts for no fault of yours whatsoever. At the paltry age of six, he lied, legs broken, in a ditch, struggling for breath as rainwater rose quickly, threatening to drown. Woman came, words fell from her lips, engulfing him and lifting him up.
Whether she was genuinely a nice person or a greedy one, maga of House Jerbiton saved a boy, determined his Gift and sold him to Lacerta Bjornaer of Cantus Arborum. There, he was given some time to study Latin and Artes Liberales before his Arts were Opened. He, however, didn't seem to understand any magics of the Order - even simplest cantations didn't work when he tried them. His Heartbeast was obsure enough too, so that Lacerta had to search far and wide for House wisdom to bring it forth. Only after it was uncovered and awakened to be an Oak, his magic powers were able to flourish.
Still, he only had ten years to study and still his limitations were there. Between all of that and need to balance ancient secrets and House loyalty, Lacerta mostly used her time to indoctrinate him into secrecy and silence - so Crataegus' self-esteem and magical prowess both plummeted as his Gauntlet drove near. Only having a precious few spells to his name, he was desperate to prove himself and so pursued dedication to his Clan doggedly, doing everything he could to serve his House.
Which, for him, meant spying on mundane militant and religious leaders passing through the Tribunal so as to timely notice their - willful or unwitting - advances on sacred places. At first, he was merely riding eyes and ears of lowly servants so as to discover mundane ways. He was able to learn some about their plans, but it rarely was much. Then, he grew brazen enough to take over the mind of one servant to eavesdrop intensely. It bore fruit, but maintaining another life undisturbed was bothersome for such a small gain. So, he took over a courtier in Montpellier and maneuvered him high enough to hear more. Such was his duty to his Clan and House.
For himself, Crataegus felt satisfied with growing apart from the covenant and sitting in the woods alone. When he needed a laboratory, he returned to Cantus Arborum, but, for the most part, forest was his home. In long conversations with trees he found wisdom unrivalled and beasts gave him a perspective that was fleeting even by human standards.
His ambition now is to grow further from the covenant, branch wider amongst mundanes, perfect Parma and, in preparation of the taking of the famed Oath, attune a Talisman of a living Hawthorn that would be of great use to making wards and becoming a fortified powerhouse for the storms ahead.
