ICM-01: Industrial Control & Monitoring

The Industrial Control & Monitoring (ICM-01) kit is an evaluation board based on the LTC2983 temperature measurement system. It enables both configuration, and reading measurement results over a standard RS485 channel. Configuration modes are accessed using on-board switches. Additional information on the state of the system is offered by colored LEDs on board.

The kit offers a default configuration, in which the system periodically measures temperature using a K-type thermocouple with on board cold junction compensation. There is also a user defined configuration in which various other sensor types can be measured. Examples include applications with a low rate of signal change such as pressure, strain gauge, etc. making this kit a good reference design or starting point for industrial control systems. Please contact Arrow to discuss supported use cases.

The ICM-01 kit (Figure below) comprises the following four components:

  • ICM-01 Board
  • ICM-01 Firmware

The user must provide the following items to evaluate the ICM-01 kit:

  • Micro USB Cable - Connects the ICM-01 to the USB port of a PC for the purpose of firmware programming
  • RS485-USB Virtual COM Port Cable - Allows ICM-01 to send temperature data to PC
  • K-type Thermocouples - For measuring temperature
  • PC Serial Terminal Software

Description

PC Serial Terminal Software can be used to send commands to the ICM-01 Board. These commands are sent via a virtual COM port via a USB connection. They are then converted to RS485 using a converter cable. The ICM-01 board receives this data and responds with measurement results, which are received by the PC Serial Terminal Software and displayed to the user.

LED functionality is described in the table above. Note that there is also a third LED, LD3, which is a status indicator of the DAPLink interface MCU.

Most types of USB to RS485 converters should work properly, but since the RS485 standard doesn't specify a connector pinout configuration, it is important to insure the DB9 pinout matches that of the schematic.

This SerialComm converter uses the correct pin configuration for our board.

Another possible solution is to use an adapter such as this product from FTDI and wiring it directly into a mating DB9 connector with the correct pinout.

The board has been designed to be powered by the external 24V power source. The board may also be programmed while receiving power from the external source. The board may also be powered by USB while programming, but this is offered only as a convenience. USB power should not be used while the board is taking measurements in normal operation.
