Blind Watchmaker is a suite of four programs written by Richard Dawkins for his two books, The Blind Watchmaker and Climbing Mount Improbable.. The programs demonstrate evolution happening in real time, using artificial creatures called biomorphs. The pictures of the biomorph's bodies are drawn by the computer based on a set of numbers in the computer which Dawkins calls genes: the ordered collection of genes for a particular biomorph is its [genome]]. Offspring biomorphs resemble the parent biomorph closely, because each of the offspring's genes are copied from the parent biomorph. However, there may be differences, because the program has [mutagenic processes, which introduce mutations in the offsprings' genes.
- [Monochrome Blind Watchmaker]] generates [monochrome biomorphs.
- [Colour Blind Watchmaker]] generates [colour biomorphs.
- [Arthromoprh Blind Watchmaker]] generates [arthromorphs
- [Snailmaker]] generates [conchomorphs (snails).
Dawkins wrote the Blind Watchmaker programs for the Classic Macintosh using THINK Pascal.
Dawkins included several saved animals.
Second Edition
The Pascal Second Edition, completed in 2015, represents the minimal changes required to compile the original sources using the Free Pascal compiler.
Third Edition
The planned Third Edition of Blind Watchmaker, building on the Second Edition, will introduce bug fixes and algorithmic refinements to the Pascal versions running on the classic Macintosh.
