Basilisk II - Aronnax9000/WatchmakerSuite GitHub Wiki
Basilisk II is a software emulator of the classic Macintosh, which runs under Mac OS X, Microsoft Windows, and Linux. The project's home page is located at http://basilisk.cebix.net/. Binary executables for Basilisk II may be installed from a Linux package repository (if applicable) or provisioned manually from the downloadable builds maintained at the E-Maculation Forums.
For a general discussion of emulation, see the Developer Tutorial.
Basilisk II Emulation setup for Blind Watchmaker
The setup for Blind Watchmaker work uses the '1992-03 - 3DC27823 - Quadra 950.ROM' ROM file, released in March of 1992 with the Quadra 950. 256 MB of RAM are allocated, which is half the maximum for the Quadra series which were the last and most powerful of the classic Macintosh line. The processor is the 68040, running at 33 MHz.
The virtual System81 volume is 256 MB in size. and has [Mac OS 8.1]] installed. The [Watchmaker volume is 1024 MB in size and contains:
- THINK Pascal 4.0.2
- FileTyper 5.3.1 (Used to change file attributes of incoming Pascal source files so that they are recognized by the THINK Pascal compiler)
- Watchmaker project files (resources, project files, and source code modules) for compilation by THINK Pascal
- Utilities for transferring Pascal source code files from the host computer to the Watchmaker volume, and changing the file attributes of the source files to conform to the expectation of THINK Pascal (AcceptFromUnixApp and AlterAttributesForTP).
Basilisk II Settings
Ubuntu
Here the virtual hard disk images are specified. The startup disk is listed first, named 'OS81System'. It is 256 MB in size, large enough to hold an installation of Mac OS 8.1, the last-to-be-released operating system which will run on m86k family processors. The other volume, named Watchmaker, is 1024 MB in size, and is used to store the Watchmaker Suite source code, executables and saved animals, together with the last official release of the THINK Pascal compiler, version 4.0.2. There are also two utilities used in transferring source code modules and other files from the host system, called AcceptFromUnixApp and AlterAttributesForTP. The latter is used to alter the Macintosh file attributes for source code modules, so that they conform to the expectations of the THINK Pascal compiler. This application was created using File Typer 5.3, another piece of Macintosh abandonware.
SCSI emulation is not needed by the Watchmaker project, so no settings are enabled.
The Basilisk II binary chosen for the Watchmaker project is the 'Windowed' build, versus the 'Full Screen' build. Video Type is set to 'Window', Refresh Rate is set to 10 Hz, width is 1024 (the maximum) and height is 768 (also the maximum.) Disable sound output is off, and the sound device settings are set to their defaults on Linux.
Keyboard and mouse settings are the defaults.
Serial and network settings are the default.
MacOS RAM size is set to 256 MB, the design maximum for the Quadra 950. The March 1992 Quadra 950 ROM image is specified, named '1992-03 - 3DC27823 - Quadra 950.ROM'. The model is set to "Quadra 900 (Mac OS 8.1)" CPU type is set to 68040, the m86k-family processor shipped with the Quadra. 'Don't use CPU when idle' is checked, to prevent the emulator from bogging down the host system, and "Ignore illegal memory accesses' is turned off.
The default settings are used.
