Installing the Development Environment - ArisiaInc/a21-remote-site GitHub Wiki
The website is built using Play Framework, in the Scala programming language.
Installing Scala
See this page for the full details. This is a very new process, and I haven't tried it myself yet (ping me if you have problems), but in theory it's much easier than the couple of dozen steps that used to be involved.
Summarizing the high points there (for Mac/Linux -- see the linked page for Windows):
curl -fLo cs https://git.io/coursier-cli-"$(uname | tr LD ld)"
chmod +x cs
./cs setup
rm -f cs
That's the basics. That installs a bunch of stuff, including:
- Coursier (cs), the dependency/package manager driving all of this.
- The Scala command-line compiler itself. (Which you probably will not use.)
- sbt, the Scala Build Tool, which is what you'll mostly use.
- Ammonite, the best Scala REPL if you would like to use one.
IDEs
If you are just building and running the code, you don't need an IDE, but if you are intending to edit it, you likely will be happier with an IDE. The two best options are:
- IntelliJ IDEA -- best known as a Java IDE, but it has an excellent Scala plugin, and the free version is plenty good enough for our purposes.
- Visual Studio Code with the Metals plugin -- the new hotness. Less featureful than IDEA, but better integrated with the Scala compiler and more likely to be exactly correct. I have not played with this much yet myself, but many folks swear by it, and it's a good option if you already like VSCode a lot.
