   From across the room the poster looked complicated and detailed. But the closer you get the less set and fixed it seems.

These figures were built from existing Lego mini-figures and some custom pieces. However, you don't have to strictly follow them. Some of the pieces used in their designs are out of print or expensive or just not redily avaliable. For the most part they're bought form Bricklink, however, there are several custom pieces. An example of how to find a piece on Bricklink is as follows...

The picture on the left is what the piece looks like. The name of the piece is to the right with a link to said piece on Bricklink. Directions for how to modify the piece are written above the link. The Item number is another identifier for the part with the color listed next to it.

Some of the minifigs use trench coats or cloaks that can be difficult or expensive to find on bricklink. I would reccomend using capes and cloaks from Capes4Minifigs. To put the trenchcoat on a minifig you will have to remove the arms from the torso. This is not intended by Lego and can cause damage to the minifig so be careful when you do it.

Also, Lego has a policy to not generally produce modern weapons of war so you're unlikely to find more modern guns and weapons. I would reccomend checking out a few different places such as Brick Arms, Brick Warriors, and Brick Mania.

To erase printing from Lego I recommend using Brasso and a Q-tip to gently erase away printing without damaging the plastic or the printing that's supposed to remain untouched.

Probably quite a bit. Lego isn't cheap and buying minifigs piecewise is even more expensive. The best way to make them cheaper per minifig is to buy a lot of them together. However, this can also balloon the price quite a bit. It's up to you as to how you want to build your collection.
