Wiring Radio connections - AllanGallop/DigiOne GitHub Wiki

Will you be providing pre-terminated cables in the future?

Currently there are no plans to sell pre-terminated cables, if someone would like to do this they are more then welcome too! There exists too many combinations of radio's and pinouts for me to accomdate every situation compared the paltry batches of boards I am making, please remember I am a hobbyist too!

What kind of cable should I use?

This really depends on what radio / connector your planning to use, but for the most part I recommend shielded audio (RCA) cable wherein each connector is individually shielded.

How do I connect all the grounds?

Most mainstream radios use one ground for both audio lines, PTT ground and the shield, yet the DigiOne has 3 seperate grounds! The best option is (as above) to use a cable that has individual shields for each connector (PTT, In, Out) and connect each to the respective pads on the board and only combine the shields at the radio connector to form a star topology. That said testers have had great success simply bridging the pads on the board with small links of wire to form a unified ground. The reason the board was designed this way is to offer complete isolation, especially in cases such as that of the baofeng radio's which perform PTT by shorting the audio input and output shields together.

Why are the pads so large?

Mostly to accomodate a variety of connections. They are intentionally enlarged to support large diameter conductors, multiple conductors and pheonix type terminals. The other reason is to accomodate those with only basic soldering skills!
