Art Bible

This document describes the visual look and feel for the game Starcraft Survival. It explains the game’s overall art style as well as providing descriptions, concept art and screenshots for all the heads up displays, character models, in-game assets and terrain.

Art Style

The world style of our game is made from the original starcraft tiles, it means we took tile's sprites from some worlds of Starcraft 1. The overall feel should put the player in a sense of spacy fright where they can imagine an hypothetical 2D planet. The game takes place in the Korhal planet. In this planet it will take place the battle of times for the survival of the Terran race versus Zerg. Therefore, the style of the darkness world should convey feelings of an epic battle with some Terran and Zerg ruins. In this world it will exist the base of Terran race that must be the last of this race, so it means the last hope. Basically, this world will be dark and with a futuristic style. The experience induces being the last squad or campaign in this futuristic and imaginary world lost in the universe.

Setting

Every location in the world is viewed through the isomètric view in a typical RTS war map. All the map is designed to give the player the feeling of a real different planet on another galaxy. The story take place on korhal planet. It’s a series of rolling hills with short grass, and occasionally some little mountains where the characters will be able to go on. Likewise it will have some rock zones where the terrain will be more darker. Near the Terran base will be some little lakes with a liquid with a blue clear color. The game takes place at night and the core mechanic relies on natural darkness from this alien planet. As such, the setting depends on being able to survive in this dark world with a fog of war.

Korhal planet

The Zerg world represents the planet where Zergs live and reproduce to go out looking for a new planets to conquer.

Loading Screens

The loading screen are 2D still images that are displayed as our level load. The scene depict should be drawn in the cross-section style that shows some of content as it appears in the Zerg planet and rest as it appears to the characters in this planet. Unfortunately, these screens were not included in the final submission due to limited art resources. The following descriptions are samples of what the images would look like if implemented.

At the moment we don't have any loading frame for our level.

Heads Up Display

Gameplay Screen (HUD)

During gameplay, information about the management of the Terran base is displayed around the screen.

The windows contain the following information:

  • Minimap of the terrain with fog of war.
  • A pair of boxes with information about the actual building or unit focused.
  • Skills or uses which you can use with actually focused unit or building.
  • Max. unities capacity and actual amount.
  • Amount of materials you have.

Characters & Enemies

####Introduction Terrans are basically "Humans". They are also the most divided of the 3 Starcraft races. They are in different factions that are all competing with each other to become the most dominant. Most of the Terrans in Starcraft are descendants of a crashed criminals holding ship. They are also the most mobile of the 3 races and are the best adapters. Terrans use their technology to survive. They are known to use powerful vehicles, body enhancements through drugs or technology integration. Terrans also seem to have telekinetic and or physic abilities, the Protoss seem to have an incredibly more advanced version of this though. The Terrans also build mechanized tools and buildings. They combine all of this to become a powerful force among the other more advanced species. They seem to be the perfect balance between organic and technological power. So, from this text of the Terran race we are going to do the artistic description their units.

######Terran ######Ground Units

a)Marine

Marines are the core infantry unit of the Terran military and always tend to have a stereotypical southern accent. They are mostly government trained soldiers and militia but some are outlaws and renegades who are forced in serve time in the military instead of in prison. They have heavy (and very bulky) power armor which extends beyond the extremities of their bodies. To compensate with the weight they carry, Marines have special Gravity Boots, that not only allow them to move quickly but also to jump fairly high too. For this reason, to demonstrate the power of this unit, their armor will be large, their weapons will be much larger and deadlier than normal and, finally, their armor are blue for the simple fact that the word marine refers to a soldier of the sea and therefore we find it convenient that the color caracterize these characters is blue.

b)Firebat

Firebats are heavily armored infantry in the Terran military armed with dual arm-mounted flamethrowers. Like the Marines, Firebats are conscripted from former criminals that have undergone "neural resocialization" and have aggression dampeners implanted. Moreover, Firebats are typically psychotic pyromaniacs though volunteers are not unheard of and, for this reason, they have the color red in their armor. Moreover, to highlight that they are pyromaniacs their eyes will be iluminate with red light and in their back they will carry two fuel tank to use their fire arms.

c)Medic

The Medic is a support unit that has the ability to heal injured allies. So, we think that it would be a good idea that this character was a woman with a white armor to show his fragility, purity and importance in the battlefield and, at the same time, highlighted in some way during the fight.This potentially increases the life span of Marines, Ghosts, and Firebats while in combat. The Medic also carries an A-13 flash grenade launcher that can blind or severely decrease the vision of enemies, as well as a large shield for defense against hostile units. With this property we want to show that even though this character is a woman, she has the power to defense their partners from the enemies and not just cure them. Apart from this, to cure their partners this character carries two big green syringes to show, in another way, that with this gadgets she will cure them.

d)Ghost

The Ghosts are gifted espionage units. They are adopted by the confederacy at an early age, when they first show signs of physics abilities. They wear state of the art stealth technology which renders them completely invisible in normal conditions. They are equipped with powerful C-10 canister rifles, effective at long range. How you can see in the image, this character it would be a woman for two main reasons: the first reason, because their are more flexible than a man, so in this kind of character it would be useful, and the second reason, because their are more agile than man. Moreover, like ghosts are silent, we have wanted to show that characteristic making the dress very simple and not heavy.

e)Tank

The Siege Tank is one of the most powerful units available to the Terrans. It is equipped with two 80mm plasma cannons and a 120mm Shock Cannon. The latter attack is very powerful, but has a short range and requires the unit to enter 'siege mode' before using the attack.

The Siege Tank fixes this by mounting a large artillery cannon on treads, allowing both mobility and firepower. The Siege Tank has two modes of operation. In "tank" mode, the Siege Tank uses its twin plasma cannons to support troops. The Siege Tank can raise its hull and reveal a pair of support legs to convert to "Siege Mode", utilizing a much higher caliber artillery cannon. How you can see, its shape is like a real tank because of his name. For another part, when the tank is convert to "Siege Mode" change and it will be like a static building with a big cannon and its color will be red.

f)Goliath

The Goliath is a combat mech unit equipped with anti-armor auto-annons, as well as an array of anti-air Hellfire missiles. It is a twelve foot tall, all-terrain combat walker designed to support marine forces. Originally designed for the Kel-Morian Combine, the blueprints were stolen and the design has become quite popular among the various Terran factions. Armed with twin 30mm autocannons and Hellfire anti-air missiles, the Goliath provides effective support for ground forces. So, this unit will have a human shape, with two legs and two arms, to identify easily that this unit is from Terran Race.Moreover, their colors will be red and black two show that they are powerful and dangerous.

######Aerial Units:

a)Valkyrie

The Valkyrie, an anti-fighter spacecraft, is only able to attack other air units. It is equipped with an array of H.A.L.O. cluster rockets, which cause area-of-effect damage to all air units in its attack radius.

b)Wraith

The Wraith is the primary offensive air unit available to the Terrans. It is equipped with burst lasers and anti-air Gemini missiles, as well as a cloaking system. Although it can attack both ground and air units, it is most effective against other air units. It is the most used vehicle in space warfare among the different factions. However, it can convert to a ground unit with two legs and two arms weapons. This Unit have the sape of a spaceship and their colors will be the red and the black to identify that this unit from Terran race.

######Zerg ######Ground Units:

a)Zerling

The most numerous of the Zerg units, Zerglings aren't especially powerful, but they more than make up for their individual weakness with vast, overpowering numbers. They will have the shape of a ground animal wihtout legs, because their genetic code is so simple that two hatch from each larva, yet they only take up one population space. They can also increase their speed once researched at at the Spawning Pool. The main weakness of the Zerglings is that because they only attack with their claws, they lack any defence whatsoever against aerial units, although they can burrow underground to escape such attackers.Their physiology may have been altered to allow them to have certain mutations and improved combat and agility skills and for this reason they look like carnivores and killer mutants.

They resemble somewhat of a cross between a velociraptor and a locust and are covered in a spiny exoskeleton but is rather thin compared to other Zerg units. They move around by sprinting on a set of powerful hind legs and forelegs (the former of which are webbed to indicate they might have some ability to swim, though they are granted no such feature in the game, and the latter of which are tipped with massive scythe-like claws for both attacking and burrowing underground). A third set of short limbs jut out behind its head and are used to maul its prey along with it sharp teeth and tusks.

b)Hydra

The Hydralisk is an evolved form of the Slothien a race controled by the overmind and developed through the Zerg strain. Through this strain they have become increasingly aggressive had have add the muscle structure augmented. The Hydralisk uses its serpentine body to move around, while it uses its big scythe-like arms to climb or propel itself faster or using them to attack close range. Otherwise it will attack with its needle spines, which fire out of flaps on the Hydralisk's head and through evolution have become an even more potent defense system. These razor sharp spines can fire deep and its poison may may seep into its prey's wound. However, because of its low range, Hydralisks often prefer to burrow and hide to wait for the enemy to move closer. This king of character looks like a mutant to show that their from Zerg race and their will be like Zerlings but with a big Head and more claws.

c)Lurker

Hydralisks gained the ability to evolve into Lurkers. While they are completely defenceless on the ground, when burrowed, they are able to shoot super dense spikes through the soil that impale anyone or anything found near that area on the surface. As such, they're perfect for defence, and are often used as "mobile turrets" to push the front line of a battle forward. How you can see, their are mutants but with the particularity that thei have an spider shape with a lot of claws in their body.

d)Ultralisk

The Ultralisk is the most physically powerful unit in the Zerg swarm. They are massive walking tanks, tearing enemy ground units asunder with their massive blade-like tusks with ease. Their biggest weakness is that they have no ranged attack or any defence against air units, apart from retreating.

The Ultralisk was brought into the Zerg Swarm after assimilating creatures known as Brontoliths and twisting their genetic code until evolving a giant monster capable of taking extreme punishment. The end result is the largest, toughest ground unit the Zerg can produce from their hatcheries. The Ultralisk serves as a tank, taking fire for less hardy Zerg and dealing damage with its giant unbreakable claws. Due to its sheer size it is unable to burrow underground and takes a long time to produce. It is also unable to attack aerial targets, making it helpless against flying enemies.

######Aerial Units:

e)Mutalisk

The Mutalisk is an evolved form of the mantis screamer species, but after the Overmind controled them and forced them to evolve with the Zerg strain they became a much more dangerous creature. The Mutalisk is an armor-cladded bat-like creature, which flies with its body in a C-shaped position. Its spine is developed such to allow it to fire tiny creatures in front of itself while attacking out of its half-tail-half-mouth other extremity. The wurms hit up to 3 targets exploding on each one as they consecutively get smaller with each self-detonation. Moreover, to show that this kind of character is from Zerg units, their appearance is the result of a mutations of a bat with another animal. For this reason his shape or wings are very similar with this animal.

###Game Objects & Buildings ####Buildings ######Command Center

Command centers, or "command posts", were designed to be roving resource processors for Confederate prospectors. The command center can up stakes and move on to new mineral or vespene deposits. They also have the ability to manufacture SCVs and serve as the return point for mining vehicles. With pressed metal plates, command centers are heavily armored and sturdy, though are slow moving whilst in flight, where they are at their most vulnerable. To show that the game is developed in a future time, the shape of this building will be futuristic, like a spaceship, and to show the importance of this place it will be large and with the front door open to differentiate themselves from the rest of. Its predominant colors will be the black and blue.

Command

######Bunker

The bunker may garrison any four terran infantry units. While inside units may not be harmed by enemy fire although they are still affected by any affects they had prior to entering. While adept at dealing with en masse attacks of weak units, the bunker is vulnerable against heavy ones. Bunkers are effective holding off chokepoints when backed by missile turrets, goliaths and siege tanks. This kind of building will have a square shape as a base and on the top of it will be circular structure and, a part from that, will have stairs in each side of the base to acces to this building. More over, this structure have a pyramidal shape that will demostrate his power and strength and, finally, its structure will be painted with blue and black.

Bunker

######Turret Is a defensive building that will have two missils weapons in their arms, and it will be useful to defense our space from the attacks of other races. Their missils will have a white color and the estructure will be blue and black. The base of this building will be painted wit black and yellow to show that this building is dangerous and strong for the enemies.

######Barracks

The barracks is one of the most essential buildings, producing 'first-tier' units. The building will ha a spaceship shape with some legs to support the structure. Following the above descriptions, the color that will predominate in this building will be the blue and black. To create this building we have inspired in satellite.

######Refinery A refinery is a somewhat ramshackle and antiquated terran structure, designed to speed up the arduous process of the vespene gas mining on the more desolate terran worlds within the Koprulu sector. Constructed on top of a geyser, the refinery processes the raw gas into a harvestable form and then automatically packages the gas into containers easily transportable by SCVs. For this reason, this kind of building will have the shape of a nuclear reactor to identify this building with the extraction of gas and their colors will be the blue and black again.

######Factory A factory is an automated terran structure which acts as the primary production center for vehicles, structures,and ammunition.The factory is used to construct vultures, siege tanks and goliaths. For this reason, its shape it will be like a tank, to identify this building more easily and their colors will be like the above buildings.

######Engeenering bay The engineering bay is a terran building used to improve the quality of weapons and armor fielded by infantry. This kind of building will be painted with the colors blue and black and its shape will be li a laboratory with four legs.

######Starport He starport is an advanced terran structure, responsible for the construction and maintenance of all space-faring vehicles and starships. Along with featuring a number of landing pads, a control tower may be attached to coordinate the upgrading and construction of advanced vessels. Starports can function both terrestrially and as space stations. For this reason, it would have a space to land the spaceships and it wuold be a high blue and black structure.

######Armory The armory is the structure where terran researchers and test groups work to develop improved materials for the weapons and armor used by terran vehicles and starships. It woul be a bigger structure and its shape will be as a little city with little edifications on their sides and its color woul be blue and black again.

####Game Objects ######The Bomb It would be an atomic bomb so its size will be large and it will be painted with two colors, yellow and balck, for two main reasons: the first one, to show that this object is very dangerous and not friendly, and the second reason, to identify more easily the bomb in the map.

####Animation In this game the animations are made with differents sprites.In this kind of animations we can see how our character move, attack and die. For another part, the buildings only have three sprites that are interpreted as animation while this building is being built by some characters.In this case, we consider that is not necessary introduce all this animations in this page because it would be a lot, so I will leave a some examples:
