Building For Linux - Aidan63/A2ComputingProject GitHub Wiki

Introduction

The GameMaker linux export is only designed to work with Ubuntu 14 and I have only tested it on Ubuntu 14.04, other distros may work but have not been tested. I will create a table at the bottom of this page for a list of distros tested and any problems they may have.

Installing the Correct Dependencies

To build to Linux from your Windows machine you need to install the openSSH client and server onto your Linux machine so they can communicate securely, you can easily install these by going to the terminal and typing;

sudo apt-get install openssh-client

sudo apt-get install openssh-server

You will also need to install the openAL libraries, these provide the means to play the games audio, do so by going to the terminal and typing;

sudo apt-get install libopenal1

This is all you need to do to prepare your Linux system for building the project.

Setting up GameMaker Studio

You need to provide GameMaker some information about your Linux system for it to be able to build to it, go to file -> Preferences -> Linux and you'll need to fill in the Host Name, User Name and Password box. The host name is the systems IP which can be found in Ubuntu 14 by going to network from the systems setting window. The user name and password is just your account name and log in password.

Next click "Check Linux Connection" on the Linux tab of GameMakers preferences and if everything has worked it will say OK.

Building the Project

Now all thats left to do is to select Ubuntu (Linux) from the target drop down and press F5 of the green arrow to build the project. If all goes will within a few seconds the project should open on your connected Linux system.

Build Dependencies

  • openssh-client
  • openssh-server
  • libopenal1

Working Distros

Below is a table of all the Linux Distros that have been tested along with comments on their compatibility. If you have a Linux system that is not mention in the table and can test it please post your results below!

Distro Name Compatibility Extra Notes
