VCS Game Maker is a visual environment for building Atari 2600 games. Build your game's logic with Blockly blocks, and behind the scenes VCSGM generates batari Basic source code (along with a bit of assembly), compiles it into an Atari 2600 ROM, and runs that ROM in a built-in emulator preview, using either 6502.ts or Gopher2600.

Desktop app

The same app also runs as a desktop program, built with Electron for Windows, macOS and Linux. The installers are attached to each release on the Releases page:

  • Windows — a Setup .exe installer.

  • macOS — a .dmg or a .zip, each for Apple Silicon (arm64) and Intel (x64) Macs.

  • Linux — two packages for 64-bit Intel/AMD (x86-64) computers:

    • vcs-game-maker_<version>_amd64.deb for Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and other Debian-based distributions.
    • vcs-game-maker-<version>-1.x86_64.rpm for Fedora, openSUSE, Red Hat and other RPM-based distributions.

There is no Linux build for ARM computers (such as a Raspberry Pi) and no AppImage or .zip; on those, run the web version instead.

  • Web — VCS-Game-Maker-web-<version>.zip, the whole site to put on any web server.

The installers are not signed, so Windows and macOS show a security warning the first time you open them. The desktop app has no menu bar on Windows and Linux. It adds the Test in Stella button and the Stella installation location option (see Emulator and Options); it is otherwise the same app.
