USB Hub - AK-NSF-EPSCoR/Vis-Space GitHub Wiki
The Raspberry Pi Touchscreen Device on the podium functions as a USB server. Any USB device plugged into any of its 3 USB ports not marked for Pi use should be automatically relayed to Hydra and pop up on one of the main screens within 5-10 seconds.
The bottom right USB port is marked as reserved for the Raspberry Pi itself. This is to use a USB device directly with the Pi, and not relayed to Hydra. Please use this port when mounting USB devices onto the Raspberry Pi itself.
What to do if the USB hub isn't working:
1. Checking the Windows Client
-
First, make sure the VirtualHere client is running on Hydra by checking the icons in the bottom right corner of the Windows taskbar.

-
The client should run automatically on startup, but if it is not running for some reason, please launch it by either searching for it in the Start menu or launching it from the Frequently Used Applications folder.
-
Do not reboot the computer (Hydra), especially if you do not have log-in access.
-
If the client is running, double-click the VirtualHere icon in the Taskbar to open the client window and check that it is connected to the Raspberry Pi server called "Raspberry Hub"
2. Checking the Raspberry Pi Server
- Second, if the VirtualHere client is running on Hydra, but not connecting to the "Raspberry Hub" you will need to make sure the server is running on the Raspberry Pi Hub.
- Touch the little 7" touchscreen on the podium to activate the Raspberry Pi interface (If it doesn't turn on, make sure it's powered with a microUSB cord connected to the top of the device).
- The simplest way to make sure the server is running is to simply double click (with your finger) the "ChechkIfUSBServerRunning.sh" script icon on the desktop
- The touchscreen can be a little finicky when running and opening files, so make sure to keep clicking it until a new window pops up
- When the window prompt pops up, simply press "Execute"
- If the USB server is running, you should receive the following output that the process
vhusbdarmpi3is running
- If the server is not running, you have three options:
- The easiest thing is to double-tap the "RunUSBHub.sh" script on the Desktop and and press "Execute" once the prompt shows
- You can also reboot the Raspberry Pi so the server auto-starts
- Or, type
sudo /usr/bin/vhusbdarmpi3into a terminal window to launch the server manually - After going through any of the above three options, repeat step one using "ChechkIfUSBServerRunning.sh" to check if the server is running
3. Checking the Client can Communicate with the Server
-
If you executed all of the above steps, made sure both the Windows Client and the Pi Server are running, but the Client still cannot see the "Raspberry Hub", go through the following steps:
- On Hydra, open the VirtualHere Client from the Windows Taskbar > right-click "USB Hubs" > click "Specify Hubs..."

- In the window that pops up, check the "Hubs" tab and make sure the IP address of the Hub
10.25.101.201:7575is listed. If it isn't, add it with the "Add" button
- Lastly, in the same window in the "Advanced" tab, make sure the "Enable Reverse Connections" box is checked
If none of the above works:
- Consult a staff member for assistance.
- If support is not available or cannot solve the issue, make use of the following VirtualHere resources:
- If you were unable to resolve the issues through any of the above, raise it at the official VirtualHere Support Forum
