Presenting Videos - AK-NSF-EPSCoR/Vis-Space GitHub Wiki
This document contains what we've learned from working with videos, both online and local, in Vis Space so far. If you suspect this document is out of date, please verify that and submit changes to the Vis Space team.
Before Starting Your Project...
Most video encoders (including all the ones recommended below) do not support exporting video at the full resolution of all the screens (13,440px x 1080px). If you find one that does, please let the staff know, because we'd really like to recommend it here.
PowerPoint & Supported Formats
While we do have VLC, at time of writing we have not confirmed whether we can use VLC in conjunction with Microsoft PowerPoint. This means that if you want to use a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, you must choose a format that works with Microsoft PowerPoint without plugins. Microsoft has a list of supported video formats in PowerPoint 2013 and 2016 here: Microsoft PowerPoint Supported Video Formats.
Known Quirks
In our workings with PowerPoint, we have discovered that what Microsoft considers to be "working" isn't always what we'd generally expect, so here's what we've experienced so far when working with videos in PowerPoint. If we've updated our software and some of these things change, please notify the staff so we can verify them and update this list.
- We recommend using the WMV format, as it loads the fastest out of any video formats tested.
- If you need to use MPEG-4 videos, make sure to use H.264 as your encoder and be aware that PowerPoint sometimes will perform further video processing on launch that may reduce video quality and increase startup time.
If you notice anything else behaving oddly, please notify the staff so we can investigate. Thank you.
