The group revisited objectives in cmi5 and clarified their usage. Objectives in cmi5 are used in the following manner:
- LMS gets the association of Objectives to AU's from the Course Structure
- The AU reports on objectives to the LRS
The group also determined that how Objectives get reported on in the LRS should be better defined in a separate xAPI profile. The group will reach out to interested parties to encourage the creation of this profile. When available the cmi5 specification will be expected to reference this profile.
In the meantime, the cmi5 group recommends the following best practices for using objectives with cmi5:
Best Practice #1 – Use of Objectives (Since Objectives usage outside of course structure is not defined.)
Objectives are defined for the course structure, but there is no language in the specification concerning their usage in statements. If an AU is using Objectives in statements, the best practice is to add the objective (with the same objective id provided in the course structure) to the context activities “parent” property as an activity type of (http://adlnet.gov/expapi/activities/objective) from the ADL vocabulary. Update test question statements in examples to have objective ID in context activities (parent) using ADL objective definition.
Best Practice #14 – Use of Objectives (in LMS/Course Structure) Objectives are defined for the course structure so that the LMS can associate learning objectives to AU and Blocks in the course structure. If an LMS has features for managing or reporting on objectives it should use the objectives defined in the course structure (to make the association of objectives to the AUs & Blocks).
