Notes

cmi5 Narrative Presentation

Dennis Hall proposed that the cmi5 narrative presentation structure should approached as follows depending on the viewer's situation):

Implementation process overview:

  1. If you have an LMS and have not added xAPI, visit Module 1
  2. If you have an LMS and have proven it works with xAPI content, start with Module 2
  3. If you have and LMS and have integrated xAPI into it, start with Module 3
  4. If you have a cmi5 enabled LMS and need to test it, start with Module 4

Where the modules are as follows:

  • Module 1: Understanding xAPI and cmi5
  • Module 2: Planning your implementation
  • Module 3: Implementing cmi5
  • Module 4: Testing cmi5

Item #3 prompted a discussion about what "LMS integrated with xAPI" meant. Dennis explained scenarios where LMS systems have not implemented cmi5, but do implement more that simply launching content with an xAPI connect string. Such LMS's monitor the xAPI calls (made by content) as the occur to modify the LMS behavior.

Registration Definition

The group discussed amplifying the definition of "Registration" in cmi5 spec as follows:

Registration: An enrollment instance of a learner in a course. (a Registration ID uniquely identifies this). The registration ID persists throughout the course progress to completion and during review of a completed course. A new registration created is for new enrollment instances (such as recurrent courses or re-taking courses).
