Notes

cmi5 vs TinCan "Package" comparison document

The group discussed the differences between the "tincan.xml" and "cmi5.xml" manifest files. (which is not currently in the comparison table). With exception of the XSD, documentation regarding specific usage of tincan.xml elements is not very detailed. See Rustici Document Incorporating a TinCan LRS into an LMS

Based on the discussion, it appears that the major differences between the two are as follows:

  • tincan.xml defines only one launchable learning learning activity (i.e. an AU) - cmi5.xml allows for multiple AU's
  • tincan.xml can contain references to content resources (i.e. files that are part of the learning content) - cmi5.xml only contains the entry point for each AU
  • tincan.xml can contain a "flat list" of learning activity definitions (only one being launchable) - cmi5.xml has a hierarchical ("block" or folder) structure with multiple, launch able, learning activities (i.e. AU's).

The group agreed that more research on the tincan.xml file documentation and current practices for its usage was needed to more precisely define the differences.

cmi5 Specification Errata

In Section 9.5.2 Duration , "cmi5" is misspelled as "cmi".
