Programme for Keir Bovis and Charline Marzin visit, 24-27 March 2015

Post-visit section

Keir has posted a number of presentations on the shared repository service, covering many of the topics discussed with people during his visit.

https://code.metoffice.gov.uk/trac/TI/wiki/TIAG/Visits/CAWCR_NIWA_201503

The CAWCR seminar presentation he gave is included as "Presentation given about the TI programme".

Keir also asked me to pass on message of thanks to everyone: Please pass on my thanks to all colleagues I met who made my stay in Melbourne so enjoyable. I'll put together my notes and circulate to you in due course. If anyone has any follow up questions please tell them not to hesitate to contact me.

Purpose of visits

Keir Bovis and Charline Marzin from the UK Met Office External Collaboration Team are visiting from 24-27 March for discussions on the UM Technical Infrastructure Programme and development of the joint science programme.

They will be visiting both CAWCR-BoM and CMAR Aspendale sites; at the Bureau, they will be sitting in one of the visitor offices on 10 North.

In their own words ...

Keir Bovis, Project Manager, UM Technical Infrastructure Programme

  1. Raise awareness of TI programme across BoM/CSIRO/CoECSS
  2. Help facilitate TI planning with you and other key staff through face-to-face discussions.
  3. Review TI activities undertaken away from Met Office to identify areas for development
  4. Develop relationships.

Draft program for Keir's visit is [#DraftprogramforKeirBovisvisit below].

Charline Marzin, Science Partnerships

Discuss how to develop the joint science programme (governance, areas where formally joining efforts would be beneficial). So far, ideas discussed for possible projects have been around global model development and evaluation, joint convective-scale model development, tropical convection, Earth System modelling (especially CMIP6 contribution to MIPs, chemistry and aerosols and land surface), DA, and possibly identify directed joint efforts to deliver new science and capability.

I could give a talk on progress with GA7/GC3 development, or focus on our tropical research agenda and convective-scale modelling, or a general status and plans etc...

I would also like to take the opportunity if possible to discuss some of my personal research over the maritime continent that I’ve been working on with my Singaporean colleagues.

Draft program for Charline's visit is in the following attachment: [attachment:https://github.com/ACCESS-NRI/accessdev-Trac-archive/tree/main/attachments/wiki/access/KeirBovisCharlineMarzinVisitMar2015/marzin_programme_mar2015.v2.doc]

Recent developments in the UM Technical Infrastructure Programme

Keir Bovis (UK Met Office, Exeter)

The Partner Technical Infrastructure Programme focuses on delivering capabilities that resolve priority weaknesses of the UM Infrastructure rather than ongoing maintenance. The medium term goal is a more streamlined system that is more flexible, easier to use and easier to adopt for both Research and Production requirements.

This presentation will summarise some of the achievements to-date, planned collaborative work in 2015/16 and identify benefits that when fully realised, will fulfil the Programme vision.

More information about the Technical Infrastructure Programme can be found in Trac pages contained within the Met Office Science Repository Service https://code.metoffice.gov.uk/trac/TI/wiki

Update on Met Office’s recent model developments and system implementation

Charline Marzin (UK Met Office, Exeter)

The upgrades made to the global modelling system in PS34 (June 2014) and to the Limited Area Models in PS35 (February 2015) comprise the biggest changes made to the Met Office’s Unified Model systems in the last 10 years, including the implementation of the new dynamical core ENDGame.

This seminar will outline these changes and benefits, and present other aspects of Unified Model system development from convective scale to earth system application, model performance, tropical convection, and a future look to the next generation dynamical core and associated software infrastructure. Recent developments towards the next Global Coupled configuration (GC3) that will be the foundation of the future Met Office’s seamless suite of coupled operational systems will be presented.

Finally, as the UM Partnership has entered a mature phase, there is scope to jointly develop some new science capability in key areas identified as joint priorities.
