The Kennedy Space Center (KSC) served as one of NASA's primary launch sites since its construction as part of the Apollo manned Moon landing program. With the sudden boom in space travel among the general public in the early 21st century and NASA's development of the Space Launch System (SLS), the KSC became the first of what we would today call a spaceport.

Operating only through old-fashioned chemical rocket technology, the relative risk of launches was quite high and only the bravest of pioneers would undertake the journey across the solar system which could take weeks, months, or even years.
