The first modules of the International Space Station were placed in low-Earth orbit in 1998 and is the oldest instance of space-habitation still operational today. As space travel became mainstream, the ISS became something of a trading hub for pioneers leaving Earth. Once commercial entities began opening competing trade stations in low Earth orbit, NASA re-purposed the aging station into a tourist attraction, however, many private vendors continued to hold orbit near the ISS and it remains the largest trading hub in LEO today.
