Summary

Thinking "like a programmer" is much less about technical skill in a particular language and much more about attitude and a thoughtful approach to problem-solving. Here are several high-level take-aways from the articles linked below:

  1. Know your priorities and actually prioritize them in your life. This should look like…
    • valuing your time much more than you do now,
    • saying "no" to most things in order to focus on what's most important,
    • and developing a strict discipline to rid yourself of distraction when you're working on these things.
  2. Have a framework ready for solving technical problems. This means practicing solving many problems with a defined plan-of-attack. The majority of your time solving such problems should involve understanding the problem and planning out your solution. Writing actual code should take the least amount of time.
  3. Always ask "why" to get to the root of a problem/question and "how" to brainstorm solutions. In coding, we can often get lost in the weeds and details of solving a problem; this practice helps us step back, "see the big picture", and understand cause and effect.
