souls - zsnothere/Brumweald GitHub Wiki
Controls magical potential, emotional range, individuality, and spiritual essence.
The binding force that links a soul to its body and pulls it partially into the material world. They also slightly pull the body toward the ethereal world.
The physical vessel. Can operate independently but less expressively without a soul.
While most beings in Brumweald are composed of three interconnected parts: a soul, a body, and a tether anchoring the soul to both the body and the material world, some rare exceptions exist. These exceptions challenge the standard model of life, death, and consciousness.
A body without a soul, a husk, is fairly normal, but over time, bodies have evolved with the influence of souls. Without a soul, many things are lost. The soul also controls things like emotion, personality, and sexuality. Emotions and personalities still exist within the body itself, but they're different from what the soul can express. All bodies with no soul rely on instinct. A body without a soul can also be quite dangerous, as physical movement and reactions within the body can both lead to magical effects without intent.
Souls without bodies, ghosts, can persist in the material world if they maintain their tether. These resemble incorporeal spirits or ghosts, occasionally observed near death sites or major trauma events.
Consisting only of a tether holding nothing, but pulling together the material world and ethereal world, a tether without a soul or body can cause strange feelings to those around it. While rare, they give a feeling of something or someone nearby and some connection to the ethereal with nobody around. While these are mostly harmless, they can bond to a nearby body, soul, or both, and in doing so, can lead to the creation of another kind of anomalous person.
A single body anchored by multiple souls may result in multiple personalities, magical discord, or emotional instability. These "hive-bodies" operate under internal conflict and are sometimes mistaken for possession.
A single soul split across multiple bodies forms a "hive-mind". These individuals share senses, memories, and magical flow. Prolonged separation can cause disorientation or tether strain. Sometimes, a hive-mind will split, creating a husk and either an overtethered body or a normal person.
Rare and unstable. These cases resemble combinations of the above and usually rely on multiple tethers for functionality.
The soul is pulled tightly into the material plane, increasing magical power and giving the body partial soul-like traits, such as suspended aging, phasing, and levitation. Upon death, pieces of the body may vanish into the ethereal world.
Without a tether, soul and body typically remain disconnected. If a soul manages to bond to a body without a tether, it has very limited control, and the soul typically struggles to interact with the physical world.
