Introduction

  • The first ever WET Codefest was a hands on event to support the continuing work of the Web Experience Toolkit project. It was successful in building a stronger community in an effort to increase adoption rates and engage new project leaders.
  • This is a proposal to hold a two day WET Codefest 2.0 early in August 2013.
  • Adoption of WET continues to grow especially since the project moved to Github and this codefest would support continued growth and participation, while assist with building capacity around WET in the GC.
  • Github has enabled even greater participation (89 associated participants – numerous GC/Non-GC contributions)
  • Codefest 2.0 intends to follow up, focus on interoperability, mobility and prepare for next release (v 4.0 Beta)

Objective

The object of this Codefest remains the same:

  • to support the continuing work to build and maintain WET,
  • to strengthen the community, increase adoption, engage new project leaders and
  • build capacity around implementing mobile and interoperable websites.
  • This year we plan to include a mobile first design jam that will reimagine the current WET widgets for a mobile first world -this is intended to assist with consistent application and adoption of the toolkit.

Benefits

  • Strengthen capacity to contribute to WET and WET implementations, saving resources by building once and reusing across the GC and even with partners like the City of Ottawa.
  • Shared Usability testing results for the WET project, development of interoperability functionality and shared approaches to mobile, allowing implementers to focus on their content and users' context of use.

Approach

  • Web Standards Office, Web Managers Council working groups, WET project leads and WET community intend to collaborate with the broader community (including organizations like the City of Ottawa, etc)
  • work with other organizations who are reusing WET
  • Prepare an Open / bilingual invitation for the event
  • An invitation will go out to WET contributors, organizations and departments
  • including a package for our regional participation model (i.e. how do we participate from afar)
Example: Charlottetown WET Codefest
  • This will be an best practices page for hosting a satellite event on the same days
  • If funding is not available, we'll research teleconference keynotes/hangouts as a more cost effective solution, but still allow the community to benefit from external/internal knowledge and skills sharing
  • For more details see the schedule below

Ask

  • WSO, WMC working groups and the WET project leaders/community to attend and encourage employees working on WET to participate in the event
  • Support from a Champion for WET on the morning of the first day of the event
  • Interested external collaborators who are reusing WET to attend event and participate
  • TBS for assistance translating our Open invitation and online kit for hosting satellite events
  • Assistance with finding and arranging keynotes that will allow the community to benefit from external/internal knowledge and skills sharing opportunities
