Alternative Venus Board

The Alternative Venus Board was designed by Adhai Gray and can be found on Boardgamegeek.

Even if you understand the expansion, please read the Before you play section.

While the BGG expansion provides three changes, this only provides two of them.

Venus scale bonuses

Because there’s no actual Venus map, and thus no placement bonuses, additional incentive to push terraforming of Venus is introduced. Every step beyond 16% provides subtype of wild resource or basic wild resource unit for the player who increased it. The basic wild resource is limited to basic 6 resources (Money, Steel, Titanium, Plants, Energy or Heat). Along with the basic wild resource, at 30% step the player gains a standard wild resource, which can be turned into a basic wild resource, or a resource on any card the player has.

Air Scrapping Standard Project discount

Terraforming of Venus lacks integral mechanism to push the process, despite being driven by variety of technologies represented by Venus-tagged projects. This variant lowers the cost of the Air Scrapping standard project by 1 M€ per Venus tag you have played, up to 5 M€. As usual, tags on events do not count.

The Colony Tile

There is a Venus-focused Colony tile that is not included in this implementation of the expansion.

Before you play

Two recommendations:

  1. I don't recommend using the Alt Venus Board with Mandatory Venus Terraforming. In fact, playing without mandatory terraforming puts an additional pressure on the game with more interesting decision options.

  2. There is a peculiar bit of UI when gaining the last Venus scale bonus. The UI will start by offering you the wild bonus, which you can use to gain the standard resource or a resource on any card. Only after you confirm that will you have the option to gain your remaining standard resource. So the first time you get to 30%, it might be confusing. Let me know if the wording is clear in the UI.
