General description

PCORnet is a Distributed research network (DRNs) that incorporates electronic health record data from a diverse set of patients and institutions of multiple sites of the United States. Its dataset integrates nine large Clinical Research Networks, 2 Health Plan Research Networks, and a Coordinating Center. Databases include:

  • ADVANCE - The Accelerating Data Value Across a National Community Health Center (ADVANCE) Network is a database from patients seen in safety-net settings and has a dataset on care and health outcomes of socio-economically disadvantaged and vulnerable patients. ADVANCE has an electronic health record (EHR) data from community health systems and includes:

    • Claims data;
    • Social determinants of health;
    • Patient-reported outcomes;
    • Other key data sources.
  • CAPriCORN - The Chicago Area Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Network (CAPriCORN) has data from diverse groups of private, county, state, and federal health systems; a consortium of federally qualified health centers; and many other partners.

  • Coordinating Center for PCORnet - The PCORnet Commons is a PCORnet Common Data Model that bring the diverse PCORnet networks (institutions, and patients), and ensures data quality for the distributed research network, developing reusable analytic tools to efficiently obtain data from the network, and establishing guide principles and best practices for stakeholder engagement.

Limitations

  • PCORnet data do not use a unique patient ID. So, it’s hard to track patients if they get care at a different place from where they had surgery.
  • Medicare data were only available for patients over age 65.
