GSIP 206 - Promote GeoPackage WFS and WMS output formats to an extension

Overview

The http://www.geopackage.org standard is now a popular data format, and GeoPackage data source has been included with GeoServer as a data source for some time. The community GeoPackage module provides a number of GeoPackage output formats two of which we would now like to make available as an extension.

Assigned to Release

This proposal is for GeoServer 2.21-RC.

Motivation

GeoCat customers have asked that this functionality be included in our GeoServer Enterprise distribution. To respect the community process this product is limit our support to GeoServer core and extensions.

Proposal

The GeoPackage community module has a number of output formats to be included in gs-geopkg-output-plugin extension:

  • WFS: Migrate org.geoserver.geopkg.GeoPackageGetFeatureOutputFormat to gs-wfs module org.geoserver.wfs.geopackage package.

  • WMS: Migrate org.geoserver.geopkg.GeoPackageGetMapOutputFormat.java to gs-wms module org.geoserver.wms.geopackage package.

To migrate to core:

Recommend renaming the community download to gs-geopkg-wps-plugin.

Backwards Compatibility

No backwards compatibility issues anticipated.

Feedback

  • Rename proposal to reflect moving functionality rather than promoting community module to extension
  • Request for assistance supporting gs-wps module
  • Request wfs and wms output format be isolated into their own extension, rather than merged into core
