A Root of Time
A Root of Time is an interactive sculpture that explores the relationship between perception and action. There is a duality between these two. To better understand this relationship I want to focus on our bodies and a controlled environment. Where action reflects perception and other way around. How are those actions relative to our perception of the passage of time? The sculpture utilizes found objects, such as a clock, an "artificial" plant, mirror and TV screen. Each of these familiar objects are placed within a glass cube to evoke an emotional reaction from where the participant is perceiving the work. By pressing down on a leaf (action), the participant changes the environment within the cube(reaction). Colors and form alters as the participant applies more force on the leaf. The LEDS around the clock also relies on the amount of force applied. A small amount of force creates a counterclockwise movement around the clock. Press down a bit more and the lights changes to a rapid clockwise movement. The screen above the plant displays an abstract representation of this similar movement. Not only is the light from the screen reflected onto the plant, but to our perception as well.
