VATSSA Ground Layout KMZ Design Guidelines

In order for us to achieve a consistent look and feel across the Division Ground Layouts and in order for the data to be used across Euroscope, GroundRadar and TopSky, we've written down the following guidelines for KMZ Design.

1 - The Runway

Each runway should be drawned through both path and polygon. Ideally, the runway area should be covered by as little coordinates as possible, to achieve a clean, straight look. Runway Area should not extend to stopways or taxiways. It can however include displaced thresholds.

Runway markings such as numbering, threshold lines. displaced threshold arrows, center lines, touchdown zone lines, etc can and should be drawned as well using path. Whenever an airport has multiple runways, runway markings should be grouped per runway, according to the KMZ Tree below.

2 - Taxiways

Taxiways connect all runways to the aprons and, ideally, we should strive to create as many taxiway segments as possible, according to the latest airport charts. The reason being that these segments can be then coded into GroundRadar or TopSky and assigned appropriate coding if under maintenance or closure, per NOTAMS. This includes the holding point taxiways.

Taxiways have edge lines and center lines, as well as surface.

3 - Aprons

4 - Stopbars

Stopbars are drawned via path and grouped into Runway Stopbars and Taxiway Stopbars, according to Charts and Google Earth.

5 - Parking

6 - Buildings

Buildings can be drawned exclusively through pologyons, with a single polygon representing a whole structure. We should strive to present at least the Passenger Terminals, Cargo Terminals, GA / FBO Buildings, Hangars or any other building connected to the apron.

7 - Labels

8 - Stand Data

When working on a KMZ, we can code in the Stand / Parking Position Coordinates that will be helpful for GroundRadar Stand data.

Stand / Parking Position Coordinates should be centered on the parking position and not necessarily on the cockpit location, which might be too forward.
