Magonid Dynasty

Culture: Carthaginian

Since the founding of Carthage, North Africa has been the heart of the Punic world for many hundreds of years. Its custodians are the Magonids, the oldest and most prosperous of families within the republic. In times past their ancestors were kings of Carthage, holding a position of such prestige and power that none would challenge them for authority of the city-state. With the eventual end of the Magonid dynasty and the coming of the republic, the family quickly found a footing in the new fast growing realm. Using their immense wealth and influence, the Magonids bought up much of the political offices and agricultural sector in North Africa, taking control of administration on the regional level. Though they would continue to vie for power in the leadership of the capital, their true power would come from their position as the provider of bread to the great city of Carthage itself.

Ensconced in a caste of such high aristocracy, few local officials could stand to obstruct the Magonid takeover of this heartland of Carthage’s domain. Few families could claim to be as loyal or as venerable as the Magonids, and very few indeed could stake more to lose with the destruction of the republic in its current form. Masters of overseas trade and all creeds of economic activity, the Magonids have asserted themselves as the preeminent Carthaginian family both politically and financially. For a frontier they have only their lack of participation in the many wars of the republic abroad. A great leader of the Magonid family would assert himself in the wars of Iberia and Sicily, ousting the other contenders to power before finally shaking off the yoke of the useless bureaucrats of Carthage.
